Post Returning horses distance rules
What are the rules regarding the distance spread of returning horses?
For instance I have a horse returning as a 3 year old. As a 2 year old all of his races were over 5 or 6 furlongs but now as a 3 year old he is likely to compete over 1 mile (possibly 7 furlongs).
I may also have the odd jumps horse to whom this may apply.
Can the preferred distance be reset, either manually or by running in a maiden (if eligible).
Darren

I actually have a flat horse returning over the jumps this season. Entered him in a maiden but noticed that the distance on the noms screen said 11f.

I presume this will change once run in a NH race?

All handicap rules for returning horses are based on current season only. Previous season runs are not taken into account. That how it is currently coded to work

10 = 100 John For Jumps
975 = 75 For Flat

Don't want to sound stupid here but does this mean that I will have to run a returning horse first in a non-handicap in order for its distance rule to be reset. I have a horse that won twice as a juvenile and I would like to put it straight into a handicap but it now requires a longer distance.

I have put horses straight into handicaps before on return no problem but I believe entered them into a race at their upper distance limit and then TOM corrected the horses best distance on that first run. Not sure if this helps you or not Darren

This may work differently now. I don't think it picks up previous seasons but will have to check
