Post Re: ASK THE HANDICAPPER
I keep saying this but nobody ever takes any notice. The handicapper can disregard any run he sees fit to if he thinks it will compromise the handicap.

Also a trainer has a right to experiment with a horses distance in the non handicap races if he wants to. There is no benefit in running it over the wrong distance in a handicap to enable it to win a group race, but there is in doing it the other way around and that is why the distance rules are there.

Hans has done nothing wrong in entering the horse and Sirius has done exactly the right thing by leaving the handicap mark as is.

There is no story or issue here.

C'mon people can we please use the honor system and stick to the distance rules? Hans, I'm leaving this horse at 110. The horse debuted and won at 15, finished second at 16, fourth at 14. This week you put him in a 20 furlong race? Now he is entered back at 14 in a handicap?

Under current distance rules trainer has done nothing wrong here, horse ran in and won a 15f maiden so is eligible to run in handicaps from 13f-17f. If he wants to run the horse over other distances in non handicaps, that's up to him. The problem is with the distance rule that a horse can only run 2f either side of best maiden run in handicaps so maybe it's time to have a look at changing this rule for next season. Imo horses should only be allowed to run in handicaps 2f either side of last run.

This is not feasible and open to abuse. You could start off in 5f and gradually up in distance until reaching the correct distance. In addition I had a horse who place over 2 miles hurdles group 1 and won a 3 mile chase group 2 so these rules should only be for handicappers.

The rules work fine as is as evident by the small amount of issues we have

Well said and thank you.

Perhaps the issue here is mine and my fantasy world of believing I (and the other trainers) should stick to the 2 furlong rule no matter the class of race. That is what I go by when I enter my horses.

I actually thought deeply to myself whether I was being fair when entering this horse in a 6 furlong group race. Way too short, way outclassed BUT I would surely knock some points off with a bad performance. It's within his 8 furlong range. Never would I put this horse in a 5 furlong race or 10 furlong and above.

Same trainer. Where will this horse identified by the kit as a 10 furlong horse end up next? It debuts at 16 furlongs losing by 22 lengths. Can I expect this horse to be entered in 10 furlong handicap races next? If I leave the rating untouched it still retains a plumb 75 rating. Can we at least debut our horses within their distance range as identified by the kit? Hans, are you on this board? Can you please tell me what distance you expect this horse to compete at?

Too be fair to Hans, in the next race Leon has a horse (Round About Midnight) the kit designates as a 13 furlong horse who is running in 9 to 7 furlong races. The horse is somewhat competitive but appears to be in the wrong distance range - perhaps by mistake?. Maybe Hans made a mistake with his horse? Maybe the horse will compete at 14 furlongs?

Horse has been entered in Coral Eclipse for next start so looks like horse was running to be eligible for group 1 rather than handicap. He could not run it in a 10f handicap anyway as it's only eligible for handicaps 14f+ until it finishes better than 9th in a non handicap from 8-12f.

Ok one for the Hunt people....

Horse runs 5th over 2.2 in maiden, then 2nd in a 2.5 handicap can this horse run in a 2.6 handicap ? or is 21F its max. due to the 3F distance leeway from its maiden race.

Thank you

Best run is the second so you should have 3f either side of 2.5

Distance rule for the jumps is rather ambiguous and needs some clarification. I think it is 3f either side of best run in a non handicap which means its max distance is 21f.

TBH with you.....I just guess it in the hunt - but then again 1 winner in four seasons says I'm really not going to upset any apple carts.
