I've used the same horse ( Wily Yeoman) for over 3 years on the flat, he was a front running 2m4 hurdler who made the pace without going stupid. A very even paced horse.

Howdy I was wondering what sort of pacemaker is best for trialing? I've noticed that i get very different results depending on the sort of pacemaker i use. Currently while trialing at 8f ive used a pacemaker that sets a cracking pace, runs out 5 lengths or so and pretty much falls over dead at the 2f mark. This gives me the fastest race times. But then i forgot to include him in a race and another horse took the lead, cruised along staying in front and then faded at the end. This gave me a completely different set of results and a slower race time. What do you find works best for the League? Cheers |

I never trial with pacemakers front runners do well in the league so if you can find one that constantly does well in trials you have hit gold |

I also do not use pace makers, and in so doing you will find other horses who set the pace that may not otherwise do so. End of the day you cannot predict what horses you will race against in the league so those that only run well if the pace is good are in my view less useful that horses who consistently perform regardless of what else is running. |

I always use a pacemaker in any race of 8f+ I use the same 6f horse in all the different distaces. I have him save as a 2yo, 3yo, 4yo and 5yo. I agree with Paul that front runners are probably best in the league, but every horse I have, both flat and NH is an Even Pace horse. If I don't use a pacemaker then whatever horse leads tends to fade in the last 2f. I have tried to breed a front running style into my horses but have had no success. I have rarely seen a race in the league where there has not been at least one front running horse, thus, using a pacemaker in my trials suits the running style of my horses in the league. |

Thanks for the replies. Its interesting that you dont use pacemakers. Maybe because i am still trying to breed up a good bank of horses at different distances, but i am finding the new/better horses coming through tend to lead and as Wannabe says, without a pacemaker tend to fade making it frustrating to judge any improvement. |
