Post RIP Kauto Star
On Monday we lost one of the very best, such a sad loss and thoughts are with connections as well as those who helped Kauto achieve greatness.

From my personal opinion it's a shame that the likes of Nicholls and Clifford were not allowed to say goodbye to the horse, however I don't blame the fact Clive decided to switch him to dressage as a reason for his death. It was an accident in a field and could have happened anywhere.

My personal highlight will be that Boxing Day at Kempton for his 5th King George, the sight of young and old celebrating with each other as Kauto crossed the line before running to the winners enclosure is a memory that will stay with me for the rest of my life. He really was the horse of a lifetime.

Rest in peace you brilliant, beautiful boy. When my children and grandchildren ask about you in many years to come I will tell them just what an incredible horse you were. I won't see one like you again.

Looks like the Nicholls and Clive Smith saga hasnt ended yet. Some story in the racing post tomorrow. Think Smith has played it wrong to be honest.

Really, really sad. Especially reading the vets report, he sounded like he was in a very bad way from Saturday; but they waited until Monday to do anything.

It all sounds a bit fishy to me, it would be interesting to hear (if we ever do) what really happened. Isn't it also strange for the vet to release a report before the owner/Collet release anything of that kind? It's also very said for Paul who didn't get a chance to see him.

Kuato Star Should have had the retirement that JP McManus gives to Istabraq who is treated like royalty at his home

Im Disgusted that Paul & His team were only given 1 minuet notice before the rest of the media were told which was a week
after the accident.

To hear The Sadness in Paul's Voice that he and his team were denied the opportunity to say there goodbye
really sickens me

If i was Paul, id have nothing more to do with him. Paul made the horse, he never made 1 mistake with race preparation or risking the horse if he wasnt right.

Hope all trainers take note and just make Smith leave racing, there's no room for people like him.

I agree with u gray, dessie was a better horse( no pattern races in those days so u had to run in h'caps). I would put him under dessie but in the same group with Denman , Carvills Hill and Wayward Lad.

Gray we are showing our age. :D

Does he have any race horses now, when I read that he wanted Kauto Star to qualify for the Olympics in Dressage u knew he was a clown.

I always think there are two sides to every story and it isn't as if Paul Nicholls is a saint either, but Clive Smith somehow managed to fall out with the Pipes which (as far as I've heard) is a pretty hard feat!

I agree with Smith that the horse needed a better life than being left in a field, he was young (in horse years) when he retired. But I'm positive there would have been queues of almost equally capable staff at Nicholls' yard who would have been able to give Kauto a varied and mentally challenging life without him leaving.

Maybe the 'accident' would still have happened, maybe not. But it's sad that Smith seemed to need to try to pocket more cash from an already hugely successful horse, and that he wasn't left in the care of a racing yard who could have showcased him to racing people rather than carting him off to Burghley Horse Trials and especially Olympia which he obviously hated.

That Olympics quip was a total joke. Not only is Collet not a dressage rider, but the Olympic horses take Katuo's lifespan and then some to learn all they need to know to compete. There was no way he would have ever made it, except to put on another dressage display.

I still maintain there's something fishy in all this. That vet report was harrowing and there's no doubt that he both suffered and was kept alive when it was clear he had no hope. Appalling.
