Am I right in saying that these rounds just count as qualifiers for the final at the breeders cup meeting? So as long as you qualify everyone has a clean slate for the final meeting?

You are correct. You need to win one of the qualifiers to be in the finals. Or be one of the two highest point scorers who didn't qualify. Once the finals start, all the points go back to zero and the winner is decided based on their performance in the finals.
