Back when it was a proper race, he was an amazing horse.
Have to find the 73 race, surely the greatest race ever.

My fav is the 77 because of Boom Docker going so quickly and Andy Pandy then taking off, would rum have caught him.

Sadly I agree, in those days the race was a proper race not like these days. If they lower the fences any more they might as well run it on the flat. I just hope we get soft ground this year, it makes it more of a race.

Plus they had better race callers in those days.

I will have to get a stop watch out. I wonder how fast Boom Docker went compared to Crisp or how fast he went compared to the last few years with the easier fences as generally they go much faster early doors now.

I bet my pocket money on Andy Pandy in this race, my first ever bet, and tipped him cause that had been my fav program when I was a toddler. Red Rum's win meant nothing to me at the time, I was just too upset about losing my pocket money :( Had to wait for the '78 race for my first winning GN bet on Drumroan backed because I was badgering my parents for a drum kit for my birthday...and no I didn't get one

My fav book of all time is the History of the Grand National, I read it many times. And I bought the box set of Red Rum races a few years ago, I always watch them this week. :D

The problem comparing times with Docker and Crisp is the ground was quicker for Crisp than Docker plus u cant compare times from now because they have shortened the course and messed around with the ground.

After reading the book my fav national horses were The Lamb( the smallest horse to win the national) and Manifesto who ran in it 8 times. and who finished 3rd as a 15yo.
