Post Criteria Group1,2,3 and listed
Hello everyone.

I keep nagging about all the things I don't know about horse racing, but I hope you will bear with me. :D

I was wondering what criteria is used to deem a race in the different categories? What does it take to be a Group 1 race, what is the criteria for listed races?

Is it prize money alone? Or is it more.

The reason I ask is that in Norway the Derby is a listed race, and we have a couple of Group 3 races, but not any higher. There is no Group 2 or 1 races in Scandinavia I think. So how is the different races determined?

The pattern board decide which races should be upgraded which races should be downgraded
and decide on what grade a new race should be The Commonwealth Cup for instance
it all depends on the average rating of the field over a 10 year period

We have had quite a few races upgraded in Ireland recently

they rank like this

G1
G2
G3
Listed
Conditions
Local G1 (for Smaller nations) Unofficial G1s
Nursery
Handicap (Class 1 to 7)
Seller/Claimer
