my mates old man used to be a greyhound trainer/breeder and he quit and got into horses, he for me is someone who when gives you a tip to not take it kindly, he tipped me last years irish, english and scottish national winner, he apparently got the irish one from this year but he's given me his thoughts for this years national. He's got £4500 on Giles Cross. So that's what i'll be on, but i will be putting £10 EW on Shakalakaboomboom and synchronised.

That'll do me then all my life savings on Giles Cross  and the house, oh no I can't it's rented
and when I win I can buy myself a new pair of glasses

Looking through all lines of form Synchronised has Giles Cross beat giving it 2 stone IMO

Form goes into the fire in the National and luck comes into it.

It used to be it's not anymore ;) the trends are proving that with all of the last 10 runners completing about 7 of the same trends it's becoming a race for class horses and only if it turns up soft will it become a Lottery.

Didn't Sychronised only beat Giles Cross by 5 lengths giving him 4lbs?

I really really don't think top weight is going to win the National for a long time.

Synchronized beat GC about 5l giving him 1lb as a novice over 3m and beat him by around 3l in the Welsh National giving him 18lb.

Synchronised is the horse that could do it I reckon.

I sincerely hope not, he is a terrible horse that won the worst GC on record.

I would argue he is not a terrible horse, out of two attempts at grade 1 level he has won both, and just this time last year long run was being heralded as the next great champion. He is not an awful horse.

Both his G1 wins were messy affairs, very unsatisfactory from a form point of view. He runs ugly, has a poor attitude, lacks that class that true champions seem to possess and merely outstayed the field this year. Had Denman run, or had he met Denman in his prime he would have been utterly broken.

He's just the type of ugly horse that Mccoy seems to get a tune out of with his rugged, finesse free approach. Unquestionably got a big engine but I don't like him at all.

Respect your opinion mate, but he's done the business twice before and I am extremely hopeful he does it again.

I would strongly advise against backing the top weight in the National at 15/2. I wouldn't even back Denman top weight at 15/2. History is not in your favour!

I never said anything about backing him. I am just saying I would like him to win. If I was betting on the National I would have taken Synchronised before he won the gold cup, he had much more favourable odds.

Post Re: Grand National 2012
If the ground stays no worse than Good to Soft, I think Synchronised has a great chance of being placed, but I agree that he has a lot against him being top weight, so I really can't see him winning. To be honest, I'm just happy to see a Gold Cup winner running in the National, as it's been so many years since the last time that happened, and it adds a bit of extra interest to the race.

For me, he was the obvious form pick in the Gold Cup (convincing win in the Lexus Chase, a proven stayer), and he was the only horse I had money on (Long Run was out of form, and although Kauto Star had won the two 3m G1s early in the season, it was very obvious that the last thing he needed was an extra quarter mile at Cheltenham at this stage in his career). I would also say that it certainly wasn't the worst GC on record, as was suggested earlier in this thread. We have been spoiled in recent years with some cracking, high-quality races and some outstanding horses in Kauto Star and Denman in recent years, and Best Mate in the early '00s, but I think this year's GC was very comparable to many of the other runnings (and indeed better than some of them) over the last 20 years or so. For example, I would certainly say that War Of Attrition's 2006 Gold Cup was weaker in quality than this year's race, and many of the renewals in the '90s were pretty average.
