Post TOP BILLING - NH
After seeing DB do one of these for the Flat, I am really interested to see how my 'upcoming' list will do in my preferred sphere of NH racing. Most of the horses I have listed are just personal thoughts but there a few that I have a little knowledge about from a few of my racing sources.

I have split my horses into categories of what they will be specialising in:

On we go:

NHF
1. Zarafshan John Ferguson Halling---Gipsy Moth
* Lovely horse, who unfortunately didn't make it to the racecourse when in the hands of John Oxx. He is a big speedy looking type, who will probably need better ground to be at his best given his US speedy looking pedigree. Ferguson did well having a 38% strike rate in Bumpers last season and this horse has the look of one that Ferguson will do well with. He has been quoted as settling in well by John Ferguson and he is on course to run in a bumper in the next fortnight. I feel that he could be odds on for his racecourse debut as he looks above average at home and I know Ferguson will be taking it easy with him. Think this horse is one to watch wouldnt surprise me if he ended up running in a Grade 1 bumper at either Cheltenham or Aintree at the end of the season.

2. Mister WK Rebecca Curtis Definite Article--Love The Lord
* Has been working well at home and providing he is found a winnable bumper for his debut, he should make a winning start to his career. He is owned by Alan Rhead and he is the sort of horse that could mock up a sequence in lower key races for his trainer. I doubt he will be a top class performer, but he has the potential to be fairly useful and thats all there is to say really. Not sure when this horse will be out but Curtis usally has them out sooner rather then later so I suspect he will be out in the next month or so.

Juvenile Hurdlers
1. For Two PF Nicholls
* Big, muscly type who has recently joined Paul Nicholls from Guillerm Macaire's powerful French yard after winning a hurdle race in Auteuil when making all the running and beating a subsequent grade 3 winner. He has been purchased by powerful owner, Graham Wylie for a big sum in access of £385,000, and is reportedly working well at home according to Paul's column on Betfair. He is a fairly forward juvenile hurder who may start in the Paddy Power meeting at Cheltenham. I know he is thought alot of by Paul and his team and he could well be a horse targeted at the Triumph Hurdle. I like what I see from this one.

2. Handazan A King Nayef---Handaza
* He was a useful if not temperamental horse when trained on the level by John Oxx but he has joined a yard that have done well with similar types and if King can sort out his quirks, he could be one the follow in the Juvenile division. He was last seen on the flat, finishing a decent 2 1/2l behind former stablemate Aklan in a listed contest at Roscommon over 1m 4f and he was rated 94 on the flat. He has always looked one that will jump a hurdle/fence one day and a recall a certain Matt Chapman saying on ATR that he looks build for the National Hunt game after finishing 2nd behind Mizani in a Naas maiden back in May. Alan targets these top juvenile events, and this could potentially be his 'Triumph Hurdle hope'. Grumeti was only rated 84 on the flat prior to joining Alan King last season and he ended the season with a 3rd in the Triumph Hurdle and a win in the Grade 1 juvenile hurdle race at Aintree. Handazan is the type not to show alot at home, but I'm sure he will be out before November, as King likes to introduce his hand quite early. He handles any ground but his best form is on soft, so he may be a horse to catch early on in the season and around Christmas when the 'winter ground' is back. Cheltenham is a long way at the moment, but if he can translate his potential to the NH game, he has a chance of going to the very top.

3. Counsel D Mccain Dansili---Kitty O'Shea
* The final juvenile hurdle place goes to the Donald Mccain trained 4-y-o who has been purchased by Tim Leslie from Sir Michael Stoute's yard. He was a winner from 7 starts on the flat, and the latest was that win in a decent looking Kempton handicap over 12f where he beat a Godolphin horse now rated 90. He isn't an obvious horse for hurdling but Mccain has been quoted as saying 'we haven't had him long but he is a nice type, that will need better ground so he should be out before the start of October and I am satisfied with him at present'. It is interesting that Leslie has purchased him, as he has some nice horses in his colours- Peddlers Cross springs to mind and he could be the type to run well in the juvenile handicap hurdles throughout the season. He took a few runs to get him right on the flat, so it wouldn't overly surprise me if he started a little slow over hurdles but he is a nice little sort, who I am looking forward to keeping track of his progress. He has been entered for a hurdles race at Perth in the week, so he could well be the horse to kickstart the list.

Novice Hurdlers
1. Ballyclough Jonjo O'neill Heron Island--That's The Bonus
* A horse I was slightly dissapointed with in 2 runs last year that he didnt kick on after an impressive win on his sole start as a 4-y-o when winning a NHF race at Haydock (Useful Ebanour 3rd). He won his novice hurdle race at Fakenham on the first of his 2 starts but he was given a hard enough race to do so, and it was a race I had been expected him to win on the bridle. The form of that race is very poor, with no winners from 17 runs since that race, and on his 2nd start, he ran dismally below form when well beaten behind Magnifique Etoile at Bangor. I put it down to him making a shocking blunder at the first hurdle, and he didn't seem to run at all from there. He was found to have been coughing after the race and Jonjo has given him time, to try and get him back. He hasn't run since December 2011, but he looks a nice sort for handicap hurdles throughout the season, and he definitely will jump a fence one day. He is one to side, and I here it that he is been prepared for a novice hurdle race sometime in November.

2. Snake Eyes Nicky Henderson Oscar--Be My Belle
* Lovely scopey horse from Nicky Henderson's Lambourn yard. He has only had the one start and that was a very encouraging 3rd on debut in the big sales bumper at Fairyhouse leading until been headed in the final 100 yards. He carried a little condition that day though and he ran very promisingly considering he didn't really handle the preliminaries well. He is a half brother to Le Romanisce, who was a listed winner over hurdles in France, and he looks the type that will rack up a few wins in the lesser novice events. He is owned by John Magnier but I expect he will be running in JP Mcmanus' silks when sent hurdling, and he is a horse I am interesting in for the upcoming season. I have no idea of where this horse is going to run next, and he is probably a horse more for the long-term. Possible, he could run in a bumper for his seasonal debut but we shall see.

3. Salubrious Paul Nicholls Beneficial---Who Tells Jan
* I am quite excited to see how this horse does now he has had a wind operation. He has only had the 3 starts and was most impressive when winning on his hurdling debut at Taunton last December. He beat a 127 rated rival in Carrigmorna King who isn't a bad yard stick from Phillip Hobbs' yard. He isn't on a bad mark for handicap hurdling so it is possible he could start out in something like the Silver Trophy at Chepstow in October but I do feel he can make his mark at a higher mark, and he is a horse I really am looking forward to seeing this season. Paul has given him a nice break and he does go well fresh, so he is one to be on come his seasonal reappearance wherever it may be. He will end up over a fence one day and Paul hasn't ruled it out for the upcoming season but novice hurdling is the more likely option and he is a horse to follow in my opinion.

4. Melodic Rendezvous Jeremy Scott Where Or When---Vic Melody
* Useful bumper a horse, showing plenty of class in 2 outings. He travelled very strongly and quickened up well to win stylishy on debut from Turanjo Bello by 4l. I got the impression, he was a grade horse on that run as the race was run in a very good time (4 seconds ahead of other bumper which was won by a Henderson horse) and he bettered that form when unsuited by heavy ground but still ran out a good 2nd in a Grade 1 bumper at Punchestown behind the classy Champagne Fever. He just couldn't go with the winner who did have the run of the race to be fair although whether he would of beat him anyway is another matter. He hails from a shrewd yard in Jeremy Scott who know the time of day and he is related to 3 lower graded hurdle winners. I think this could be the best progeny of Where and When, and he is a horse who I expect to be competiting in graded races later on in the season. Nice horse, one to follow.

5. Turanjo Bello Phillip Hobbs Turgeon---Tchi Tchi Bang Banh
* A horse who will be better in time but he did show decent bumper form in 2 outings when finishing 2nd on both occasions over 2m at Chepstow. Ont he first occasion, he was a good 2nd to an above average type in Melodic Rendezvous (on the list as well) where he travelled well before emptying out towards the finish but he did beat the rest of the opposition by 2 1/2l and the 3rd has won since so the form has worked out well. He didn't settle really and he looked as if in need of the outing so he did well to finish 2nd in the circumstances. He was then sent off 3-1 favourite for a weaker looking bumper on his 2nd start, and again he finished 2nd but this time to a Kim Bailey trained horse, but he did give the winner 13lbs and he only got beat 3/4l. Its unknown how good the winner is, but I suspect she is a handicapper but this horse looked like he needed a break for growth, and now with him doing well at home, and with those runs under his back, he could be one to follow over hurdles. Hobbs has done well with similar types and while I don't think he will be a top class hurdler, a think a decent prize is in this fella.

6. Swing Bowler David Pipe Galileo---Lady Cricket
* I am convinced that this horse has what it takes to go to the top this season. He has won 4 from 4, and has looked very impressive in doing so. He is the only foal of Lady Cricket to run, and he built on 2 easy successes in bumpers at Wincanton and Warwick with 2 decent wins over hurdles. On the latter, he was in a battle at the last when he was upsides with Sleeping City who fell and give him the race on a plate. It seemed a rather lucky success, but I think he would of won anyway and I do like the attitude of this horse. He is fantasticly bred been by top sire Galileo, and he looks the type that will improve with racing. He is still a bit weak according to David Pipe but they like him alot and he is a horse I am interested in seeing. He is a bit behind with some of David's fitness wise so he isn't expected to be seen until late November early December.

7 Your Tepee Or Mine Nicky Henderson Indian Danehill---Kerry Lily
* Not sure how high he is up in Henderson pecking order regarding novice hurdlers but I was impressed with his winning debut at FFos Las when green but still doing enough to beat subsequent dual winner Azure Fly (gave 3lbs). He is a nice bred type been by Indian Danehill and he is closely related to Ericht, who never really trained on despite a useful bumper career. This is probably the most riskiest horse on the list, but he could well be a Cheltenham Festival Type is he has wintered well, and I get the impression that he has an engine. No idea on when he will be next on the track but he has been gelded since his bumper victory.

8 Willie Gunn Jonjo O'Neill Westerner---Last Theatre
** Still a maiden from 3 starts in Bumpers but he has been shaping with real credit and he is one to look out for when sent over hurdles. He was travelling very well last time out, before been slightly outpaced towards the finish and he ended up a slightly dissapointing 3rd at Newton Abbot, all be it to an impressive looking winner Dats The Plan. It was slightly strange that Jonjo kept persisting with the bumpers as he is a slow type that will eventually need 3m, so I am interested to see when going staying hurdling. He is a decent traveller, and I am convinced a decent handicap is to be won with him during the season. He is a little bit weak at present but Jonjo has brought him along well i.m sure and he is an interesting horse for the upcoming season.

9 Up And Go Donald Mccain Martaline---Santoria
* Useful recruit to the Donald Mccain stable who I hope can be very successful when sent novice hurdling. He was a very taking winner of his point to point at Lemonfield, winning heavily eased down from a subsequent 30l winner and he was a sought after horse, costing connections over £250,000. He is closely related to Cash and Go who is a G1 winning hurdler currently with Edward O'Grady and he has been pleasing Mccain in his homework. He is a bit heavy at the moment, and Mccain is working on getting him into shape and he is due to be out in October. He is big built which stands him in good stead for chasing in the future, but I am hoping I have a decent novice hurdler on the list here and hopefully he can reward my trust.

10. River Maigue Nicky Henderson Zagreb---Minor Tantrum
* Useful novice for Henderson who showed good form in 2 bumpers last season and I am hoping he can be a decent hurdling recruit. He ran a good race on his first start when 3rd to the useful Royal Guardsman despite travelling the best until 2f out. I put that down to lack of race fitness, and perhaps the winner been the better horse on the day but he showed plenty of ability in that Ascot race and was a real eyecatcher. He was then sent to Ayr for the Scottish National Day bumper which has been won by some smart types over the years including Sprinter Sacre for the same yard and he duly obliged but in battling fashion showing the horses possesses battling qualities as well as good bridle qualities. He is a big scopey sort who reminds me a bit of Finian's Rainbow (Both owned by Michael Buckley) and as with Your Tepee Or MIne, I am not sure where he stands in the pecking order at Seven Burrows but he looks a very decent prospect in my eyes and he should be an interesting horse to watch over the course of the season.

Handicap Hurdlers
1. Ted Spread Paul Nicholls Beat Hollow--Highbrook
* This is probably the horse I am most looking forward to seeing next season as I thought he was a desperately unlucky loser in the County Hurdle at Cheltenham when travelling very well until been badly bumped and losing momentum 2 out. He was eventually eased down to finish 16th but that didn't tell the story if you watch it again and I know Paul thinks he has a big one in him this season. He was a classy flat performer when trained by Mark Tompkins, winning a Chester Vase so it wouldnt be a surprise to see them try 2 1/2m sometime this season. He looks a horse who could well be back at Cheltenham for the County next March and I just think he is a horse to follow- simple as that. I could be wrong, and he could be dissapointing but i am convinced he will win a big one and when he does, i'll be smiling.

2. Module Tom George Panoramic---Belle Royale
* Shown good form in only start in this country thus far, dispatching a good field impressively at Cheltenham last January. He beat horses like Hinterland and Sivola De Sivola who are decent horses in their own right and he looked like he was still immature when winning. i think their is an awful lot more to come from this horse this season, and he is a big sort who will jump a fence one day- possibly this season. I know Paddy Brennan likes him alot, has previously said on Racing UK, he is looking forward to sitting on this one again this season and he is a horse that could end up been much better then a handicapper. Looks as if he will stay 2m 4f, given his pedigree and I am interested to see how this one does this season.

3. Rigidity Tim Vaughan Indian Ridge---Alakananda
* Useful soft ground horse, who I do think could win a valuable handicap at some point this season. He went off the boil towards the end of last season but I put that down to running on better ground as he did when pulling up at The Cheltenham Festival. He ran a great race when 1/2l 2nd in the Ladbroke to Raya Star on soft ground, just getting reeled in, in a close finish. He ran a decent 6th off 5lbs higher when 11l behind Celestial Halo in the Levy Board at Newbury 2 weeks later. He has dropped down to a mark of 135, which isn't bad considering how close he went off 132 in a big handicap like the Ladbroke. Tim Vaughan has many of quiet patches so it will be interesting to see when this horse is declared, but I suspect this is a horse for November/December time. He isn't the most straightforward horse so he is one to treat with caution but at the same time, he could easily pop up at big odds in one of these big handicaps and show his true ability.

Novice Chasers
1. Captain Conan Nicky Henderson Kingsalsa---Lavadou
* Really rate this horse and I think he could easily be this year's Sprinter Sacre. He showed a fair level of form over hurdles with the pick of his form a short head success from Colour Squadron in the Tolworth Hurdle at Sandown. He was dissapointing in his next 2 outings at Leopardstown and Kelso, but he bounced back to form when chasing home the impressive looking Darlan at Aintree in a G2 event at the National Meeting. He was always thought of as a chaser by Henderson and he is a massive looking horse. He stands at 17.0hh and he is a horse that for me, will be 20lbs better over fences. If thats the case he will be rated 162 over fences for me, which makes him a good thing for whatever G1 novice chase he goes for. He could go for the Arkle but he could go for the Jewson especially as Simonsig is expected to go for the Arkle (antepost FAV). Captain Conan is a horse I am excited by, I expect him to be like Sprinter Sacre, but maybe a little inferior.

2. Theatre Guide Colin Tizzard King's Theatre---Erintante
* Horse that will improve for the switch to fences, and I expect this horse to be competitive in the graded chaces towards the end of the season. He has plenty of scope and showed a fair level of form over hurdles without standing out. He is a horse that does benefit for a run so it shouldnt be a surprise if he gets beat first time out but he is a nice sort that stays the 2m well, and I expect this progressive son of King's Theatre to do well this season. He is lightly raced having only 6 starts thus far and with improvement to come, he is one to follow this season. Tizzard rates this horse highly and he was thought enough of to run in the Grade 2 at Aintree when behind Darlan. He did travel well that day though weakening 2f out and he was simply not good enough. He again is another that will improve plenty for the switch to chasing and I am looking forward to seeing how this one goes this year for a shrewd outfit.

3. Empire Levant Paul Nicholls Empire Maker---Orellana
* Big lovely grey that is owned by Sir Alex Ferguson, and I think he could be a nice type now sent chasing by Paul Nicholls. He had some useful form to his name over hurdles including a 6l 2nd behind Champion Hurdle winner Rock On Ruby in the Intermediate Hurdle at Newbury off a mark of 128 (hit last when leading). He was dissapointing when beaten at Newbury and Cheltenham in equally hotter events, but I put that down to him been too high in the handicap over hurdles and I know Paul has taken his time, getting this one over fences. I don't think this is a horse that will be winning grade 1s but i do think he has the potential and ability to pick up a half decent prize. A decent addition to the list.

4. Ballyrock Tim Vaughan Milan---Ardent Lover
* Winning point to pointer who showed decent form over hurdles last year including a close 2nd behind Fingal Bay in the Challow at Newbury. He stays well and he is another who should appreciate the bigger obstacles this season. He was a big dissapointment on his final start of last season when pulling up in a Grade 1 at Aintree, but he had his problems after that 2nd at Newbury and he has had a wind operation over the summer. I am not sure this horse is grade 1 category but I think he could potentially be an ideal type for the 4m novice chase race at Cheltenham and then possibly onto the Scottish Grand National (Yard won this with Beshabar in 2011). He gallops, he stays well and probably needs cut in the ground to be at his best. Vaughan has already described him as 'an exciting addition to our chasing team' and I think this horse could be one to follow throughout the season.

Handicap Chasers
1. Aiteen Thirtythree Harry Fry Old Vic---Prudent View
* Horse that didn't really go on as expected after an impressive start to his chasing life. He was disssapointing when well beaten in the Hennessey (sent off 9/2 fav)- Paul Nicholls fancied him strongly to go close in this and after that, again he was dissapointing when well beaten in the SKy Bet Chase (11-2 JF) despite been fancied again. He has since switched to Harry Fry, and it might be a case of a rejubinated horse if Fry can get him right. He has lots of ability, and although he isn't the easiest to train- I do think he has the potential to win a decent prize. Whether, he has trained on or not I am not sure, but I will give the horse a chance. He is been lined up for The Hennessey again for his seasonal reappearance.

2. Tataniano Paul Nicholls Sassanian---Rosa Carola
* One of the most hardest horses in training to train but he is undoutebly classy. I think every year, that he is a legitimate Champion Chase horse yet he always seems to get injured before hand. He was very impressive in his only start of last season when quickening clear at Chepstow from Nomecheki. He isn't an easy horse to place and it is questionable whether he still retains his top ability but he is a horse that if kept fit, could go to the top and he is a horse that does run best fresh and he is a horse I am prepared to take a risk on.

3. Eastlake Jonjo O'neill Beneficial---Guigone
* Handicap chaser who isn't the clasiest but I feel he has a decent prize in him. He ran on sunday at Uttoxeter where he did his usual thing of travelling well without finding anything in the final 3f. He is a strong travelling type, who jumps well enough and is on a decent handicap mark at present. He is by Beneficial, who prefer better ground, and in heavy rain on Sunday, I thought he did well in the circumstances to finish 6th. He had some useful form over hurdles and he was expected to make an above average novice chaser. He hasn't set the world alight since sent chasing but he is too well handicapped at the moment to ignore, and if Jonjo actually woke up and realised he doesn't stay 2m 4f as he has tried on his last 5 runs, he might actually rack up a streak. His form over 2m is very good, I put that down to his strong travelling nature. He is infact 5/6 over 2m and 0/7 over 2m 1f or further. That is pretty obvious to me that 2m is his thing and I think he could be the type for the Grand Annual at Cheltenham if he progresses as much as I think he can. He is a talented horse on a going day, and when dropped to 2m, it will be time to sit back and enjoy the ride. I am hopeful this horse can gain at least 2 wins this season.

Hopefully these 25 will do us proud but another 5 hotshots that i will put up are for the big races (antepost):

Sprinter Sacre (Champion Chase horse)- Obvious. Evens
Big Bucks (World Hurdle)- Obvious.- 5/4
Darlan (Champion Hurdle)- 14/1 ew
Hunt Ball (Gold Cup)- 25/1 ew
Always Right (National) 181/1 ew

I will update everytime I have a runner from the 25 above:

All the best

Dean

Edit: Have added Ballyrock (T Vaughan) to the list.

For the Novices Chase's this think you could have added Montbazon but agree with the Captin Conan as i think them 2 will be pretty similiar this year and probably the top 2 in this category(assuming Simonsig goes for the Jewson or RSA)

Handicaps wise Cape Dutch from John Ferguson's yard could be intresting in the big hanicaps as well Houblon Des Obeaux for V Williams over the long distances.

Grand National wise Hey Big Spender could be the one to watch this year for me.

Funnily enough Hey Big Spender was my national fancy until Tizzard wrote it off in the week. Irish national is his target mate.
Montbazon is nice but I already have possibly 2 arkle horses in Captain Conan and Theatre Guide and I think they have a lot more improvement in them over fences. Wouldnt put you off him though mate, good luck.

Cheers for the positive feedback, be interesting to see how it goes. Btw, well done DB on Hajras. Won well today and Hanagan finaly came good for you. Nice one.

Ahh that's a shame really has Tizzard already had his open day or was it an off the cuff statement? And is there an interview with him think he's got quite a sharp mind love to read what he thinks of the season.

Handicap chases this season are going to be very open as i don't see many obvious stars in the chasing ranks with Sir Des Champs and Bobs Worth being the 2 Gold Cup favs at the moment would seem to say that were in a transition period of chasing. Hunt Ball could be intresting if he improve again maybe Quel Espirt could be the one he looks class if his jumping holds.

Aiteen Thirtythree put me off him last year as he was just poor consistently have there been reports of a wind op maybe found something wrong with him?

Yes, he had a wind op before he joined Harry Fry mate. Be interesting to see if they can get him back. There was talk of him been the 'next denman' when a novice so he must have plenty of ability.

Haven't had a bet since 1973 and not going to start now, but like your list and will be following it just for curiousity.

The list will be underway tomorrow! Zarafshan has got the go ahead to run in the finale at Market Rasen. It looks a tricky race with plenty of form on offer, and as said previously, Spirit Of Shankly is a very nice sort for Charlie Longsdon. He is in receipt of 5lbs taking both Kielan Woods and Jack Quinlan's claims into consideration and he looks upto running a big race. He has a nice flat pedigree been by Halling out of a mare by Efisio and hopefully can kick start the list with a victory. He is forecast 3/1 which seems a fair price but I wouldn't totally rule out him needing it tomorrow. He had his problems with Ed Dunlop so it is a bit of a retrieval mission in that sense although personally, I think he should be in the 3. Quinlan is good value for his 3lbs and I am hopeful all in all.

Zarafshan 5.05 Market Rasen

Post Re: TOP BILLING - NH
Zarafshan travelled quite well throughout his racecourse debut at Market Rasen but my fear of him possibly needing the run looked the case as he just got a bit tired towards the end of the race and he finished a quite comprehensively beaten 5th in the end but he did show promise. I think that the Grade 1 bumper hopes are a bit unlikely now but I think he could be one to keep an eye on now with that pipeopener. The winner Spirit Of Shankly is very good and did hold a Grade 1 bumper entry at Aintree last year so I suspect it was a decent bumper so I wouldnt give up on John Ferguson's gelding just yet.

No bet for 40 years at all, or just over the jumps Bill?

No bet at all, only gambling is £2 a week on lottery.
I learnt not to bet in my riding out days.
You don't see many poor bookies and horses are not machines so anything can happen. No such thing as a certainty.

I know Frankel is a brillant horse but by certainty, would you stake your life on it. I just hope Frankel does win but nothing is certain in racing or life. Not a pessimist but just facing facts, I saw enough working in racing to put me off betting.
