Post subject: | Breeding |
I have recently took a huge interest in the Breeding side of horse racing and as there is a lot of well informed and knowledgeable people on the forum, I wondered if people would be able to perhaps recommend useful websites or information they have on the subject. I know that it covers a wide range of things but any information would be helpful. Thanks! |

Your best bet is with - http://www.pedigreequery.com/ - it has been invaluable to me down the years. |

The site looks very good, you can trace all the way back to the foundation sires, as for a book, I've got this, not really got round to reading it properly yet but it's split 50/50 between the history of the thoroughbred and the genetics and it looks unite good, has tony Morris as an author so should be- http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thoroughbred-Br ... ony+Morris He's got another book that's also quite good, it's a bit old and it would be nice to see an updated version but its still informative nonetheless- due to its age it's probably almost exclusively second hand - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thoroughbred-St ... ony+Morris |

Here's an interesting article giving another look at the genetic side of things if you are interested in that part of it. http://www.racingpost.com/horses/home.s ... t7DaysNews |

Thanks Ubar... I did look at the first book but read the reviews and it looked as if it would be over my head for now. The Racing Post link was useful though. I received a copy of last years RP Breeding supplement and there was an interview with Jim Bolger and what he is doing with Equinome. It's very interesting. I do think that the majority of horses perform well over a certain distance but that it is the class of the horse (over those he/she is racing against) that decides whether they will win at a distance further or shorter than Ideal. Personally I think Dawn Approach will be difficult to beat in the Derby. The first five furlongs might be uphill but then its pretty level until the descent. Most of the top class Derby winners excel at around 1M 2F (Sea The Stars won three G1's at that distance after, as did New Approach who also won three G1's after) I think Dawn Approach will follow in the footsteps. |
