Post Belmont Stakes
Who thinks that California Chrome will win this Saturday's Belmont Stakes and become the first horses in 36 years to win the triple crown?

Could one of the moderators maybe move this to the "Real racing discussion" forum?

Back on topic, it would be great to see a US triple crown winner.

I am skeptical that he will get the distance, but I think he has the best chance to win out of everyone. Not sure that Wicked Strong and Social Inclusion are genuine, and General A Rod and Samraat are going to have trouble with the distance. Ride On Curlin and Commanding Curve have running styles that do not do well in the Belmont, and Kid Cruz, Matuszak, and Matterhorn are just a step below everyone else. That leaves Tonalist and Medal Count. Not at all a fan of Medal Count and think he will have a lot against him if he wants to win. Tonalist, the new shooter to the field will need to do a lot to win, but has a winning running style. I see him and California Chrome dueling it down the stretch.

My Early Picks:
1- California Chrome
2- Tonalist
3- Commanding Curve

I tend to disagree about Samraat having trouble with the distance. His dosage numbers are DI = 1.22 CD = 0.20 / DP = 1-0-9-0-0 (10)

That DI of 1.22 is about as low as you get for top class American 3yo's in these days of breeding for speedy 2yo's who can sell early for a big price. His speed and his ability to rate somewhat make him a big contender. Speed always seems to rule in the Belmont granted there is no suicidal pace. The fact that he can lead all the way in a 6 furlong sprint as a 2yo in his debut is something I find very impressive considering his long distance breeding. Samraat looks to me like a future superstar.

When I dope the race entirely I'll post my thoughts in the real racing discussion on what the outcome may be.

Post Re: Belmont Stakes
Well I doped the Belmont and have made my selections. The race on paper seems void of speed which heavily favors the speed horses at the Belmont distance. The top three horses Beyer speed figure wise are all the speed horses too.

I see a three horse race developing. Samraat and General A Rod will go for the lead with the question being who wants the front more. California Chrome will rate just off these two. After what I predict will be a glacial pace these three will seperate from the rest of the field turning for home. California Chrome will take over from Samraat and General A Rod will try to keep chase.

Here is where it gets tricky - Does Chrome keep going or hit the wall that his breeding suggests is quite possible? I'm going with Samraat after the slow pace to re-rally on Chrome and get up to win in the final strides. His breeding says he should love this distance and it appears they have been aiming for this race a long time now.

Samraat
California Chrome
General A Rod

------------------------------------

My guesstimate on what speed figures they should run and their running styles...

1. California Chrome - W - 110

2. Samraat - WF - 107

3. General A Rod - WF -105

4. Ride On Curlin - WO - 100
5. Wicked Strong - OW - 99
6. Commanding Curve - OW - 98
7. Commissioner - WO - 98
8. Tonalist - WO - 98

9 Matterhorn - OW - 91
10. Medal Count - WO - 90

11. Matuszak - O - 83

Belmont Stakes Finish:
1- California Chrome
2- Commanding Curve
3- Matuszak
4- Commissioner
5- Ride On Curlin
6- Tonalist
7- Wicked Strong
8- Samraat
9- Matterhorn
10- General A Rod
11- Medal Count

Just can't see a way California Chrome loses. Commanding Curve and Ride On Curlins running styles are perfect to hit the board in the Belmont. Matuszak is my live longshot. After watching his past few races, I couldn't discount his ability. He is talented and looks to be better at distance. Should be an interesting Belmont Stakes!!! Good Luck and #CaliChrome12!!!!

[EDIT] After spending my first 5 hours of my morning watching race after race from every horse in the field, I realized I put Commissioner way too far down in my list. So now he has been moved up to 4th. Matterhorn has also been moved down a spot.
