Any suggestions on breeding a champion horse?

Is it a

- horse's overall rating at retirement,
- number of group 1 races it wins,
- overall win/loss ratio,
- or the time it posts?

Which of these are more important to getting a great offspring?

Is it more important to have a great stallion or mare for breeding or are they equally important?

Personally i go on G1 Wins for Game Horse, with my homebreds i know their individual ability through the game and Race Builder but id say the best guide is G1 Wins but its probably a bit of everything

I really believe that the handicap rating is the most important thing I have had a horse win 30+g1s but slipped down the rating to 99 when 7 and 8 and was a dud in stud and I had many horses win a couple g1s and retired with rating of 130 and be big stars in stud so I always go by ratings just my opinion

With game horses I look at G1's won. I don't go for any of those with my horses though.

With my own I tend to look at how much speed and acceleration they have and I try to pair them with a horse that will overcome that horse's faults i.e. the game seems to enjoy giving me lots of 1m1f horses which are too slow for a mile but often don't stay 1m2f. I try to pair them with either a really fast miler or a 7f horse to get a horse that stays 1m, or a horse with a bit more stamina to hopefully get a good 1m2f horse.

I think that a good mare is less important that a good stallion. I had a mare in SO3 who was rated 30 never closer than 10 lengths off the pace in all of her 5 races but she had full acceleration and a high speed rating. Over the years I put her with the best stallions I could find and all but one of the horses she produced won a G1, the one that didn't won G2's and G3's. She produced 9 foals in all. Overall I think the stats the horse has are the most important thing to consider when breeding.

So that's my opinion...!

I bought a 83 rated mare in my first season and put her into the breeding barn and bred her with a 130 rated stallion who had won 4 G1's and 2 G2 races.

She produced a filly who is now 4 and has just won her first G1 also has a G3 to her name.

So kinda have to agree with the above after seeing the results for myself.

My new batch however are all bred by my 130 rated stallion and paired with 130 rated mares who have won alot of G1 races so far results are very good.

Although I still believe in looking at stats no point in wanting to breed a future 1m champion with a Mare who has no stamina or if you want a 5f sprint champion pair off 2 good speed horses.

Trial and error I suppose and see what gives the best horses and stick to it.

I generally breed my best with my best so best 5f mare with best 5f stallion i keep track of who runs well in the race builder and go from there, i normally only breed exact distances though sometimes i will try breeding say a 7f with a 1m1f horse to prduce a miler but max difference between the 2 horses i will go is 2f. If i use game bred horses i tend to only use them is if my barn is short on horses at that given distance but i generally go for the ones with the highest fee. I also sell all my horses that don't make the cut so when there available for breeding i can use those too.

Dont breed horses who have bad temprement always check the paddock as a 2yo when racing, dont breed horses with poor agility and dont breed horses who find little in races

I agree with the post above about handicap rating playing more of a factor than Group 1 wins.
