Hi folks
As i new player trying to come to grips with this game i've been trawling through this forum for answers rather than asking tons of noob questions.
I keep reading comments mentioning great posts from PJ, especially about auctions, but i cant seem to find any.
Can anyone be kind enough to post a link to any of these posts (particularly auctions) ?

I have to say i love this game. I am a data analyst/database designer so this game is mental porn for me.

Cheers

What did you want to know about auctions?

Ok :D

Is the only indicator of a potentially good, un-raced 2 year old the reserve price, apart from the limited breeding info and preferred distance?
Ive taken to buying 2 yr olds with a couple of races under their belt, run in wrong distances ect and have picked up a couple of good horses doing this, but when i look at the unraced horses with the same basic info the only difference is the reserve.

Also do horse attributes change between new games. I had the same unraced horse in 2 different saves and they were very different?

Cheers

I'm not sure the price is a good indicator. I've tried buying the priciest 10-15 and not been that impressed, though I'll defer to the opinion of some folks who sometimes try and buy them all. I think picking off some after they have a couple of races is a better indicator for me.

In different saves the horses of the same name look different to me.

The game recycles names and combinations of names play for long enough it will start to steal your names. The horses will be fundamentally different.

As for auctions the end of year auctions are pot luck in my view, reserve price just means you waste more money on the donkey, it is a part of the game that needs improvement. As a new trainer I would spend more time in the mid week auctions and look for a horse with some form, your current approach of buying when they run the wrong distance is sensible. You can also use the follow function to see if that Derby winner is going to auction later in his career, my whole breeding program now is based on spending 2m+ for a 20 G1 winning game stallion who was sold at 6yo. Does not happen often but when it does it will offer a leap forward.

When money is not a problem then buying up the end of year crop can be used to add something to the equation your maybe missing, but prepare for disappointment, though a gem will be thrown up on occasion, more often than not the horses suck.

If you don't breed horses then the reserve price does make a difference.
I went for approx. 40 odd seasons without breeding and the more expensive the horse the better it was.

BUT

If you breed and you breed for specific ability bars then at some stage - no matter how much you spend, your bred horses are always better.
Sometimes an in game freak will come up for sale and they are excellent to buy as their performance/ability bars are usually very good and are a must to put into your breeding barn.

In your breeding barn you can click the box to access other trainers horses to breed with - my tip there is the more G1 races the horse has won - the better.

If you are not aiming to race in the league - then breed with your stable champs that you race and enjoy the game - playing like this will give you years of fun.

If you want to try your hand in the league - it's a total different ball game - where you have to be much more scientific and selective with your breeding where you can't be as sentimental.

Thanks for all the advice. :D

I will stick with buying horses with a couple of races under their belt for now, I have managed to get a very good G1 winner for 350k.
Looks like a breeding program will be my next venture.

Also i was bidding on a very promising horse and won the bids to then be told the reserve wasnt met (noob mistake i guess) so i failed to buy him.
I figured if i can set a "follow" on the horse i wont make that mistake if it comes up for auction again.
Is there a way to search for a horse so i can flag it, the "Horses" list only appears to cover the top 100 of whatever you filter on?

Cheers

If it is not on the list you could try looking at like g1/g2 races in the schedule, you maybe about to track it down in a race itself.

Buy the 5 to 10 most expensive 2yo at the end of the season auction, most are crap but sometimes something special appears:

Ive found the answer to my own question, the "Form" button has a handy filter by name.

It may be necessary to ask how one could raise horses in a more downhill way.
