 Gallops
Can anyone tell me what the benefits are (if any) or disadvantages to sending your horses out on the gallops. Thank you

I would like to know that too, as I have lost one season home galloping my horses just to see the difference it was going to make, at the new season, I learned that I lost one season and nothing changed in my horses, so, I have got to say that part of the game needs to be looked at in the near future.
Sorry I couldn't help you guys with your question as I am in the same boat as you.

Im thinking that maybe gallops are there to give your crew ability to see if they need gelding, retainers etc?

I wouldn't know blooms, I'd say mark should answer a few of these questions on here, I have read the SO4 Instructions but not much is explained in there.

i think its to show the distance and to quicken condition bar bit quicker. I.E if you have 2yo and it cant go the pace at 5f gallop no point racing it at that distance.

Can be used to see how good horses are lets say you have a group 1 winner over 1m4f use him/her as the lead horse over 1m2f.Now look for your 2 yr old's who can stay about the same distance and put them all over the gallops.
Watch the gallops and look for anything that chases home in the final 3 furlongs take a note of the horses that beat your group 1 winner as they could have potential over this distance.
Also used to get horses into racing condition run them over 6f about a month before a big race (mainly I use for the horses who run 3 times a year) if using manual training it can help peak a horse for racing if used right.
That is how I use it anyway.

I mostly used them for schooling over jumps. Small, but noticeable improvements.

The only reason I use them is to compare horses who run over the same distance to make sure I have the better horses entered for the group events.
Din't realise they might add something to the bars. Will definitely try them jumping now.

Of course, this depends on the horse Scobie. Some, no matter how much you school them just won't improve, but the good horses will improve.
Hope it works well for you.

I tried the gallops in SO3 and saw no difference in anything in fact the results in the gallops when trialing young horses would often lead me to believe 1 horse was better than another but on the racecourse this would all fall apart.
Only had a dabble with my jumpers in SO4 and like SO3 quickly gave up. Maybe I was too hasty, not sure but I agree, would be helpful if Mark would explain a little bit as to the usefulness of the gallops in the manual.
I thought it would help at least get them race fit but that was as good as my thought that a young 4 miler should start in 2m bumpers lol.
Maybe it stops them from running green? Doubt it though.

thats great colmodea...I really thought the gallops had little use apart from comparing horses.
Will give it a shot tonight...have you had any improvements on any other stats bar the jumps one?

One thing it definitely does (early season) is bring the horses weight down. If you have a look at the beginning of the season your horses are heavier until they have had a run or two. Galloping does this for you
