Well you`re in the right place for starters, just trawl these forums and you will find lots of in depth hints & tips.

1. Play on easy mode for your first game, you get decent horses to start with.
2. Try to make enough money to buy a breeding barn and use 3rd party stallions or mares.
3. Don`t be afraid of starting again. In fact it`s a good idea to start a few games and transfer good horses to your best game for breeding.

I started on normal level and it took a couple of months to get going, I found to start with get an apprentice jockey who can ride at 7st 10 (ideal for claiming races,) Pitch your horses in at a high level at the start hopefully with not many runners to pinch good place prize money and get a decent rating with your horses, if horses are getting well beat in handicaps, dont be afraid to run in claimers, if they are better than the field comfortably back them quite heavily and buy them back in the auction or let them go if the price is right, I would also buy horses that are rated 85-100 and cant win handicaps, drop them straight in to a claimer or seller, back them heavy then either sell them or buy them back, try for cheaper purchase earlier and build up from that, also buy any 2 year olds for less than 5k try and improve them at 3 yr old and sell them on, I stuck with tom queally as my jockey and have won about 10 group 1 races, the breeding barn is also really good but you need plenty of money, I bred quite a few 2 year olds and ran out of money so had to sell a few, was gutted when they won group 1s for another trainer,

probably gave you a lot to think about there, the other thing is gelding the horses can improve them but it does decrease the value.

enjoy it and dont get frustrated :D
