Post subject:  Sprinters
How do you guys develop pure sprinters in your game?

Do you breed solely with 5 furlong specialists or use milers with great speed stats and breed downwards?

Ideally i've love to breed a front running pacey 5 furlong horse but never quite get it right even after seasons of pouring over race results to get the right type into the breeding barn.

Is it just pure 5 furlong horses and cross your fingers and hope for the best?

Thanks mate.

I mean usually i can get great results at other distances but rather than the Epsom Derby its the Nunthorpe that i want to win and i can never come even remotely close...

I cant seem to breed a horse that will run 5 furlongs in 56 seconds.

How picky are you with your breeding? How far are you into the game i.e what year are you in?

Usually, I breed my sprinters with any G1 winner over the same distance.

For example, if I have a 5x G1 winner in my barn and I want to cross him with a good sprinter I will search the barn and only breed him with a mare that has won G1's over 5f. What I mean is, if her record says 5/2/2 but her 5 G1 wins were over further then I won't breed. Look at times too.

Do this enough and you should end up with some tasty sprinters, takes time though :lol:

Usually i try to breed within distances so i'll only breed milers with milers and 10 furlong ones within a furlong or so but i can seem to breed a decent 5 furlong horse.

Sometimes there are non owned ones that appear in the breeding barn that i think finally but unfortunately my mares or stallions aren't of the required standard to produce top class sprinters.

I guess i'll keep trying but this particular race is proving my nemesis :?

I only breed multiple group 1 winners. Usually 5 furlong stallions with 6 furlong fillies/mares. 6 furlong stallions with 7 furlong fillies/mares. That way they run over 5 furlongs when there 2yo and then they get 6 when there 3yo etc.

I have NEVER won a sprint G1 in this game. I'm finding it impossible to breed or buy a decent sprinter. I have got a couple of nice looking 3yo's who are sprinter types but sprinters seem extremely hard to come by in the game.

i think if you race them in g1s at 2 or 3 it ruins them you need to hold them back until 4 then they win g1s regularly

I find it tough with sprinters too. I'm hoping perseverance and patience will reward me soon!

I've just started to establish a lovely line of mile - mile two horses which I'm hoping will lead me to the promise land of the league.

Nothing like having a top class sprinter though.....

I find that breeding 5f stallions with anything up to 10f mares can still produce excellent sprinters with the added benefit of producing (occasionally) awesome 7f/1m horses.

The key is having good mares, back in SO3 when I was actually winning races I wrote a thread on supermares which are mares who pass on stamina but keep the stallions speed and acceleration. That way, even an average 5f horse (by average I mean good, but not amazing) could create a supreme miler, or a good miler could create a top 12f horse.

I've not played nearly enough (only 30 seasons across all my games) to experiment but I'm sure you've seen that certain mares always produce decent types. Doesn't matter what stamina she has send the best horse to her always (best does not equal number of group 1 wins either, I have horses with 10 G1 wins that struggle to produce group winners with good mares).

Finding top class sprinters is the key to doing well in the league. You need to get speed and acceleration into your stamina lines.

Thanks for that Rich. That's really interesting. I do have my foundation mare still who has produced horses wanting 7f-1m4f. She won over 6f as a 2yo, 1m2f as a 4yo and was placed in the Oaks, as you said she seems to pass on her speed and acceleration with the stallion's stamina. Sadly she's getting on a bit and her progeny aren't as good as they were but I will have a go with that one.

I'd love to be able to buy some of the non-owned mares in the stud.
