Breeding: Filly or Mare?
Is there a difference if you have a mare or filly in the barn? Does it affect the ability of the foal?

Re: Breeding: Filly or Mare?
age
When a horse is born, it is referred to as a foal. A foal can be either a male (colt) or a female (filly). Generally, a horse can be referred to as a foal, a colt, or a filly until they reach the age of four. At four years old, they are then referred to as a stallion (male) or a mare (female).
A yearling is a horse between one and two years old, either sex.
A gelding is a castrated male.
so dont think it makes any difference breeding wise

So you don't think it matters if you get a filly up the duff or wait until she turns five?
I guess this would be more of a question for actual real life breeders rather than on the game. Is for example a 6-7 year old mare's body more prepared for carrying a foal rather than a 4 year old filly? Is the pedigree of the offspring affected?

Re: Breeding: Filly or Mare?
very rarely do breeders in real life breed with with 3yo fillies
they usually wait and see how there 3yo career goes then breed the next year at 4
there has prob been the odd classic winner retired after winning a classic and been covered at 3 but most breeders let them have a full 3yo career then breed early the next season

Game wise I have noticed that about the mares, come the time they are ten then the quality does dip. The stallions still tend to produce good progeny into their 15th/16th year.

I retired a 2yo filly to breed with a game horse...the 2yo never ran and the reason why I did this was because both horses were 4 milers, breeding with the grand national in mind. The 2yo was also a game horse that I had purchased at auction, I will see what happens.

Re: Breeding: Filly or Mare?
I have tried the same thing with 2yo's but unfortunately I didnt have much success. I imagine if you bred enough of them then you might get something. Having said that I think I was trying for a 5/6f sprinter so it might be different for the extreme distances of which I have never really got involved with.
On another note with the age's of mares producing quality. I have noticed a couple of mine in recent seasons that have bred multiple G1 winners when they were 13-14. I am coming to the belief that it really does depend on the horse and instead of setting an age limit, I give my mares 3 seasons to prove themselves before retiring them from the game.

Re: Breeding: Filly or Mare?
Gamewise, as PJR said, I don't think age matters as far as the ability of the offspring goes, though I don't tend to retire my mares until they're five anyway, so I'm not 100% sure.
In the wild, fillies as young as two can be bred (apparently), though as horses' bones don't finish fusing until they are at least four (often 5/6 or even 7 in big warmbloods), I would think that a four year old would be better physically able to carry and birth a foal.
I've noticed people posting that their in-game mares tend not to produce decent offspring once they reach their teens, but I personally haven't noticed a difference in mine. Might be wrong, though- I have a stupid amount of horses in my breeding barn >.>
