Post Getting Started
Im new to the game, thought i would play a few games and try and get used to it, the first time i was making the mistake of entering my horses in claimers as they were the only ones i could win, but i have nw discovered why my horses were being sold when i didnt want them to be.

im just wondering if anyone can give me some pointers when starting as i dont really seem to have any decent horses when i start, nor can i seem to win any races, would you advise training yourself or letting the computer do that auto? how should i play it getting some money together and start growing and gaining wins?

i am looking to do this without cheating also.

cheers

If you don't want to cheat, then do the following.

At the start.
Sell two of your horses to raise some cash. Keep one back to skip through the season with by entering it in races the furthest date away, then either pull it out or just let it race. Don't stick it in a claimer or seller though!

Get towards the end of the season and check the record times over each distance in the RACECOURSES section. Make a note of the STALLIONS with the quickest times.

Buy the breeding facilities in FINANCE.

Skip to the next season. You will get the 2yo Pre Season auction. Chances are you won't have the money to pick anything major up. If you do want to buy something, get a sprinter, 5/6 furlongs. The game produces more good quality sprinters then any other distance. Me thinks anyway.

Check the BREEDING section and look at the NON OWNED horses. You may have one of the record holders who has been retired. If you have, make a note of the horse preferred distance. If not, check the winning times of the STALLIONS available, in comparison to the record times.

Go off to the end of day sales and look for Fillies or Mares aged between 3-6, with a rating above 80 and that prefer the same distance as the record breaking stallion Try pick them up.

If you get one, RETIRE TO STUD. Then breed them with the Stallion. Their offspring will be available in two seasons.

In the mean time, use the horses you may have running in handicaps, going by their rating, preferred distance and going. You should get some winners. Once they can't go any further, like Listed or Group races, put them in a Selling race and bet heavy on them. You'll get some money for the win and from the horse sale afterwards!

Hope this helps you out mate 8)

In my opinion, if you play the game this way you will miss a lot of what is great about this game. It is not all about just breeding. At the beginning sell all 3 of your horses, go to the races every day and look inj the auction at the end of racing. Try to pick up a horse that has won a seller or claimer first time out easily. I forgot to say, skip 6 months at the beginning of the game to allow some form to build up. Then, as time goes on, buy better and better horses, selling off the ones you buy early on for a profit. Once you have enough to buy the breeding barn, then by all means start breeding, but don't be mistaken in thinking this game's only depth is held in the breeding, it's not.

I don't play to beat the handicapper, I play to win Group races like everyone else. however, I don't go down the line of, forget about the actual game that SO4 is and breed breed breed, going through a season in minutes just to try breed bigger faster horses, and then export them out of a game and re introduce them into another, basically immortality. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but, no horse is immortal and once it's dead it's dead. However, in the breed breed breed game you play, every horse you've ever had is technically available to breed with any other you've owned or own. Now, this luxury is not available to the poor AI trainers, so, eventually you get your 'world beaters' and your 'world domination' but it is all somehow fake for the foresaid reason. You get an unrelistic advantage over the computer trainers, and therefore, how can your horses be beaten? If that's enjoying the game, then, as you said, each to their own. Why bother racing against computer trained horses when the result is a foregone conclusion? I know people get to show off their 'World Beaters', but beaten what? Each to their own though :)

Neither me or PJR mentioned transferring horses to another game. I was simply putting across the point of looking at times over amount of group wins when it comes to breeding. I DID mention using the handicaps as a way of using other horses in my original post. I've only used the transfer option to build a league squad for the upcoming season and now thats done I'll go back to playing usual way.

And the poor AI Trainer can do one, considering the amount of times I've had a crap 6f horse pip my 1m4 multi group winner on the line to ruin a 100% season record

Again unnecessarily critical and negative neves_rats
And the way you put things over seems very sarcastic and condescending extremely condescending maybe you enjoy it.

Most people on the forum On The Nose will do anything to help you out in a positive manner you know that yourself.

We all enjoy playing the game in different ways, I'm sure lots of you on here would never dream of playing the game the way I do - taking ages over a season, watching 100's of races, keeping hold of and entering my "no hopers" in claimers/sellers and low grade handicaps etc...but thats just how I like to play the game. Let's just all agree that SO4 is a brilliant game, and can be played in lots of different ways huh? Let;'s leave it at that before we fall out over a game we all love, end of!
