I cringe every time I hear some commentator or badly informed sports journalist class Ashley Cole as a 'Legend' , 'Best left back in the World' or other over exaggerated compliments,
to an above average player at the best.
He will probably win his 100th cap against Brazil this week, but can anyone rate this player in the bracket of other centurions like Charlton, Moore, Shilton.
This just proves how bad the England squad has become, and how easy it is to pick up meaningless caps.

Disagree completely there!

Ashley Cole may be a complete tool off the pitch with some of the things he has done, but on the pitch he is still probably in the top 3 left backs in the World right now, if not the best, and easily the best left back England have ever had!

He has never let his country down and has been one of few who has always come away from a big tournament with his reputation still in tact.

Although I agree with the song that Ashley Cole is a W**nker, he deserves his 100th cap for England and i will be clapping him just as much as i did Beckham and Gerrard!

i by no means am not a fan of him either as a person but to call him an above average player & no more is incredibly harsh he has to be one
of the best left backs England has produced they don't give away caps its the cream of a nation so to have longevity over a
12 year period is exceptional and he could get shilton's record easily

& meaningless caps well there has always been meaningless pointless friendly matches in international football
would love to see home international series bought back instead of friendly matches remember that in 70s

The reasons you remember it for could well be the wrong ones, which is why they don't have it anymore!

Well, te crowd problems were awful, to the extent that England haven't played scotland since 1999, but I agree, I would prefer to see something in the style o the six nations but now they have euros so would say its pointless.

The Home Internationals were a great way to end the season, I remember them fondly.

What was that about Ashley Cole by the way??

euros started in 1960 ubar long b4 home internationals

the trouble that happened at landsdowne rd was not part of the home series it was a friendly that professional groups of england hooligans targeted because security was poor and the trouble in 1977 wembley when Scottish fans wrecked the crossbar was not part of the home series

i dont think there was any trouble in the home internationals series and now with cctv technology you rarely get trouble in grounds a 1 off now and again but they no if they get caught on camera they will do time so its become a great deterrent

it was a great competitive series and was a million miles better than friendlys

I agree totally that the hooliganism that blighted the game in the 70's and 80's has passed,
So an end of the season Home International tournament could be a good place to blood youngsters into the national teams, but the old problem of players not wanting to play and claiming tiredness will come to head.
The run up to World cup's and Euro's would be better served by semi-serious games against Scotland,Wales, and NI than by playing Leichtenstein and Bolivia.

Back to Ashley Cole How much competition for the left back spot has he had in his career, it is only now that Leighton Baines is pressing him. I still think he has been over-rated, maybe a good consistent player in a very over-rated team

Congratulations to me for passing the 100 mark

ya the days were hooligans can get away with that has passed i think wales scotland northern ireland and the republic had a tournement few years ago england were not invited it was the opening of the aviva

You cant argue that Ashley Cole is one of the most successful players ever he has won the fa cup more times than any player
he has been with 2 giant clubs since he was a kid with the barrage of foreign talent hitting the prem in those years if Cole was an avergae player he would not have held down his position especially at Arsenal and Chelsea.

Dont get me wrong i am not a fan of his but i have to defend him calling him above average clearly he has to be at least international class
to have done what he has done

anyway only my opinion

well done on making it to handicapper

Ashley Cole is hated by many, but even if you hate him, i think if you put personal feelings aside you would admit he is one of the best left backs in the world. Im not keen on the guy but he has been one of englands most consistent performers for a long time. defo deserves his 100caps and if that puts him in the legends catergory then that is fine by me!

I have to agree, I can't stand him either, he comes across as arrogant and all self important, and I still recall him claiming he was treated as a slave on, what was it, £40K a week?, but as a footballer he is definitely more than above average, even when it hurts to admit it of the tosser :)
