Post subject:  Pregnant dog terminology question

Throwback to horseracing?

From the manual
"In this game, any dog ‘in-foal’ will give birth after the end of the season. At the beginning of the next season an UN-NAMED PUPPY (1yr old)...etc..."

I haven't began breeding but presumably bitches can only give birth to a single pup every year?

Is 'in-foal' an actual K9 expression? I always thought it was reserved for the equinne species? I know little about racing dogs but thought the k9 term was 'pregnant bitch', thanks to my lack of exposure, if that is the correct term, it almost sounds offensive.

Also I've noted a lot of what sound to be like horse racing names or left over from SO series. Is this my imagination? I'm trying to think up good dog names. Ironically I grew up near a trainer and wish i'd paid more attention to the names but if i remember correctly the trainers referred to the dogs with nicknames.

Thanks for that.
'bitch in pup' certainly sounds better than pregnant bitch or the game manual's 'in-foal'.
