Post Re: Rags to Riches - My Approach to Breeding for the League
Totally agree battling qualities can be a differentator, I list as a bonus simply due to the difficulties in breeding it onward.

I also agree with the national breeding aspect, Though it is possible to combine 2m flat with 3/4m jump to get 4m jump the probability is like one in a million. National Sensation came from such a breed, blind luck, 2m flat horse podgies boy who won some league races and 3.4m jumper who sucked in the league and he rates at 4m jump, but despite many thousands of attempts, read 50 seasons, 15 copies of national sensation and a stack of 3m+ mares I never bred another and have for now abandoned national breeding.

I'll also post some pics at some point, my horses don't look quit as polished as Paul's so will give people another view of what G1 can look like.

Post Re: Rags to Riches - My Approach to Breeding for the League
Josh,

just putting some of this in to practice, can I ask, is there no concern for the "condition" bar ? As after applying the following -

Year 4
"rest them (usually 1.5 to 2mths) until the point I am preparing to run the 2yo's in there final race. I then put them into full training and monitor them for export in the same way I do at 2yo"

The condition bar is very poor, yes 100% full green but the red is 50% ???

Image

Where am I going wrong ??

Thanks
Stu

I do keep an eye on it yes as if it is too low you cannot get them to full fitness, some horses are also quite fragile when they are 2yo's. Though leaving them in rest mode for a month or so, read blue training, the red condition bar usually peaks and only drops a little in the time it takes them (3 weeks ish) to hit full fitness again, I would say I am usually at no lower than 70% when exporting.

And from the pic that would not worry me, though green looks just off full. In the training page if you leave your icon on the 'i' box and then advance a few days you can watch the antagonist relationship between fitness and condition when in each of the three training options.

Thanks for writing that up. It was very nice of you and informative!

Don't take this the wrong way, but it made me want to try online league less. It isn't that it is so intimidating, since with your write-up it is clear enough. That is just so much work. I think my enjoyment of the game would decrease. I'm old, after all that I'd be too tired to care how they ran. ;)

Which is a pity, since the online league seems like fun. I'm not sure how to attract more casual players like me to it. There are four issues I see. The sheer amount of just click-through fast-forward prep. Using the pool for breeding stock has corrupted many of the games I've started. The league has enough members who have solid stock that you really do need to do something like this. The game doesn't handle trialing (hidden stat? other factors?) like it does other races, so you can't tell if a horse that has won in regular play and has good bars is a good trial horse or not without doing the other testing you suggest. I already keep spreadsheets to track horses in regular play, and I think with that I am tapped out on my effort for fun ratio.

I think most understand how you feel. I race in the league and I just play, race and breed a stock single player game - that is how I enjoy it and would not find it fun to click through races. But in saying that - this up coming season - we have made a major push to add more low rated races for trainers like yourself and I and a lot of other league trainers to be able to race competitively, week in, week out and to also have more chances to win races.
I guess G1 races are out of our reach but we are also doing a trial this season by adding G1 races from Australia to certain weeks to stretch the G1 talent pool over certain distances, sex and age groups to hopefully open up these races for lower rated trainers to pinch a G1 race here and there.
In short we are endeavouring to give more chances to all trainers to win a race or more next season.
I say give it a shot yourself - you may or may not have a Group winner but it's still a lot of fun and a thrill to train a winner in a handicap races :-)

Not everyone plays like this, I don't and my horses are competitive. I play a normal jumps game and that is pretty much it. I will more likely only play about 10 seasons before the next league season and that should be enough to get good horses for the next league. All i do is trial every season and only breed with horses that trial well

If you want to be competitive on the flat your talking a crazy amount of time I MEAN
a ridiculous amount of time to get G1 horses the jumps is different so suggest Newbies
have a crack at the jumps side of things if you are new and expect to be contesting G1s
its not really a realistic target but that should not stop you from entering why not give it
a go its a bit of fun and plotting a big handicap is great fun something i can no longer do
well sometimes on the jumps. Not entering just because you wont have a G1 star im sorry
i really dont get that it really is great fun at all levels in the league give it a go its not
life or death and really what do you have to loose by trying it.
i guarantee you will enjoy it as long as you keep your targets realistic.

Leon is a phenomenon I dont know how he does what he does in such a short space of time
but has been doing it for years and his results speak for themselves.

Post Re: Rags to Riches - My Approach to Breeding for the League
See that's my other (personal) problem. I had one UK combined game and it became so corrupted it had to be deleted very quickly. And reimports back corrupted my US flat game, so I ended up losing all my games to that bug. My only real game right now is a brand new US flat one. Not that my transfer pool had great horses, but due to the issues I decided to delete it loosing even any good ones. I am in the US btw, so I am most familiar with that schedule. My new game's horses are just becoming competitive now, and I have sent some distance ones via pool to a game I just started on AUS schedule. I'm old, and remember when US had more longer races, and I miss them. It will be at least another season before I have my UK combined one going though I did start it last night.

Since I mostly race US flat in the game, for nostalgia from growing up around it, I don't see how any of those would be worth me even taking the time to do the trial testing. And certainly not from a new game.
