California Chrome
To move away from the guineas for a moment, what do you all think of calfiornia chrome? sure, he was cheap and his pedigree doesn't stand to much, but boy does he look good, his santa anita derby win was incredible and I really can't see anything beating him in kentucky

Re: California Chrome
I think he will stay but his breeding is awful and he won a poor Santa Anita Derby. I suppose he could be a freak.

Re: California Chrome
He could be a freak, but his breeding isnt terrible its just unproved, it may have been a below average santa anita derby but the way he won, i don't think many would have beat him in a higher class santa anita derby. And plus im not so sure that it is a very high class kentucky derby this year, I really think he could win and win the preakness, the belmont will be the issue, but I think noone really knows if he could stay a mile and a half or not.

Re: California Chrome
talking about potential triple crown horses, to further the thread some more could we see another japanese triple crown winner, isla bonita certainly has good form and has won the first leg, and looks like he will improve the further he goes.

The breeding is very poor, Lucky Pulpit was a average race horse and the dam was a selling class race horse who won only a 8000 claimer at Golden Gates, her grand dam won only a maiden at Charles Town. Lucky Pulpit breeding for 2500 and has very few decent race horses. Horses shipping over from the west course struggle because of the different surface. Plus he likes to be up front and there looks to be plenty of pace horses in the field.

Will the apparent distant limitations in his breeding be his undoing. As far as poor breeding - who cares. He's already shown he is top class.

On form he's behind Intense Holiday because he beat Hoppertunity 7L where Chrome beat him just over 5L. And there's a few other horses Hopper fits in with and there's not that much between them. Chrome shouldn't be that price, hopefully he will start short and I can get a couple of decent price horses. I think breeding is important because poor bred horses don't win the top races, very few do. Even Mine that Bird was bred by Birdstone.
