Post subject: | Meet the Nags Part 1 - Flat |
There has been steady progress with my flat horses following a period of specific breeding to improve many aspects of my team, though in general I still favour the jumps and most of my lines therefore lean towards horses that develop later in their careers. For the most part I expect to find myself scratching around in the handicaps again, though feel I maybe better placed to challenge for listed or group 3 races this season, as much as I have improved I expect others have moved further forward. 2YO With very few top potential 2YO’s around, this group maybe in with a decent shout of being competitive in group races. At least 2/3 more will be added after week 5. Rock Hound – Product of a cross breed between two out and out speed horses, Legend (who has added his speed to a lot of my breeds) and the filly Gem, trialled consistently well at 5f and the 6f mark, hopefully he’ll improve on my woeful sprinters of last year. Two Bites – From the perfect sprinting speed stallion (Space Marine), least on paper as he never made the grade at trials, inherits much of his credentials but also transferred that potential to the racekit. My best sprint filly ranges 6f to7f. Required Force – Half of the same breeding line as Rock Hound, the Colt Legend, but spliced with a 1m filly to produce an out and out 7f horse, capable at 6f also, been in trail contention for some time now and has consistently beaten off the challenges of the newcomers. Heartbreak Legend – Another who owes his breeding to the sprinter Legend and in this case a game bred, solid if not spectacular at the 6f to 7f range will compliment Two Bites for the early part of the 2YO season. Doom – Mix of a breeding stallion and a top grade filly who is in the team as a 5YO chaser (Chocolate Brownie), peaked early, but never developed from his excellence at 2YO, this will likely be his one season for glory at 1m. 3YO With full potential monsters from the Thunderspark and Rhodes stables to content with, I have gone light on my 3YO’s team this season, with just enough to fully exit the team after week 5 and nothing in the sprint distances, though one may survive for the St Ledger form depending. Not expecting much, though there maybe two who have just enough to at least not be also rans in the 3YO classics. Ubbe Ragnarson – One of the many sons of Ragnar Lothbrok, who failed to make the team at the last cut, but who had been breeding for some time, this iteration (who has a preference for softer ground) was intended to be a jumper, but he is by far my best 1m 3YO so will be given a shot at the 2000 Guineas, copes well with good to firm. Punters Fancy – One of the few full potential 3YO’s to come out of my barn and not be utterly rubbish at trials, gets her speed and potential from the colt Max Throttle and the rest from a breeding mare called Another Piece, who has been responsible for many of my team this year. Is one of the two who maybe a nice surprise and will have a crack at the 1000 Guineas. Charles Vane – Another who gets his breeding from Another Piece, Capitol Hill being the colt on this occasion, another horse who was almost included until the last trial. Solid at 1.2m to 1.4m but I am not expecting much, would be happy to see him take a top three spot in a handicap. Enchanted Moment – My 2nd best 1.4m Derby candidate, who makes the team as the top option, Mocha Latte, is in as a 5YO. Also comfortable, indeed he maybe better at 1.6m and may hang around long enough for a shot at the St Ledger. Breeding was from a full potential 3YO colt called Stepping Stones, though he did not inherit the potential and a random unraced breeding mare from the barn. Guilty Pleasures – The other who may provide a surprise and will be my Oaks candidate, she is a flawed horse on paper, but has two very redeeming features from her lineage, Ragnar Lothbrok and Another Piece once again, both features were enough to overlook the other failings. Trailed very well and nearly took a slot in the 5YO team. 5YO With a breeding programme based heavily on the jumps, my late developing horses remain my strongest group and I expect this lot to be competitive in the handicaps, they may even sneak a lower tier group race or two. Twisted Transistor – Front Running 6f horse, blessed with decent if not breath-taking speed. Is very much a case of can you catch him. Breeding includes Twister who is also in this team and one of my very old colt sprinters who can trace his breeding back to Indian Summer a failed chaser of last season’s league. Twister – 6f Mare who sired Twisted Transistor amongst others has a much older lineage going back to beyond the last league, Legend being the colt again for a bred sprinter. Decent but not expecting miracles. Whole Nine Yards – Real shock 1m gelding who has two nags in his lineage, both straight to barn horses, though neither was without redeeming features and he seems to have inherited the best of both. Consistent performer, but probably not a star, expect form in the handicaps. Second Reflection – Late entrant to the team after I decided Chocolate Brownie should go chasing instead, solid 1m performer with breeding that again includes the front running The Second Coming and Subtle Reflection, largely a breed mare and one of the first to unlock higher cruising burst for me. Likes soft but travels well on good to firm, Handicap prospects. Breed the Beast – Not a horse I expected to see in the team, was one I figured would be a breeding mare, like her mother Best of Breeds, gets the other side of the line from The Second Coming an outstanding front running 1m horse who again fell out of league team contention at the last trial having dominated many a trial since the last league. Handicap hopes at 1.2m for her, maybe even a listed or group race, sometimes front runs, sometimes does not, better when she sits and waits. Mocha Latte – What happens when you breed a dog slow 2m horse called The Tortoise (winner over hurdles and fences in the last league) with an all-out speed 6f horse, Legend. Well a full speed 1.4m with very decent supporting aspects it seems. One of the first horses breed after last season and has produced some of my stand out jumpers since, still going strong in the barn. Hope he can translate the trial form into the handicaps and lower tier group races in the 1.4m range. Will also see racing at 1.2m Pumpkin – One of the late comers, from my last breeding cycle before the final cut. Enchanted Moment, who is in the 3YO team is one side of the breeding history, and one of the to be added week five 2YO’s (Princess Nina – the missus) the other. Very impressive in trials over 1.4m could challenge in the low tier group races. Mission Accomplished - Somewhere in my breeding mission for this league, I cracked the 2m flat division; it is the one area of my team that has taken a huge leap forward. Mission Accomplished is one of many I had to choose from, with very little to tell them apart, He is solid from 1.6m to 2m, sired from Duracell below, who unlocked the whole division and Horror of Clowns a bred mare. Closes like a freight train in the last 2f. Grinding – Another Duracell offspring who pared off with a mare called Relentless who could have also easily made the team, Grinding is the pick as she cannot Jump, others who can will stay in the mix for future leagues. Not any real speed in the tank, just a constant punishing pace, she will literally grind you down. Hopeful she has group class in the 2m bracket. Duracell – The key to my 2m Flat offerings has bred a stack of them since. Again has last year’s league horse The Tortoise in his bloodline, mixed with a very decent 1.4m horse with great staying ability. Changed the landscape of my 2m flat horses, really hope he plays out as well as I expect. I shall be bold and say group prospects, but only at the extreme distances, stays to 2.4m and will go Ascot Gold Cup unless his offspring beat him to it. |

Great info. Will be really useful if we do some review shows this year. Be good if some others had time to do something similar. |

Was done with the review shows in mind. Was interesting to put together for me with respects to the lineage and what consistencies I see within them. |

Might be worth setting up a new topic to get trainers to give their views on their runners Martin. I would certainly let you know when I fancy my chances (even though that won't be very often) |

My Flat Team. I don't expect much from them. Because I've done little breeding they are mostly related to last years horses. Lochsong my top sprinter from last year was a late arrival but will struggle to compete with the best now but will try to win a/any race with her. Za Approval my top dirt horse is coming back to try to win the World Cup, my first horse to win the Breeders Cup Classic and loves to find trouble in running. I will be surprised if he's good enough now but I love him so much he had to come back for another season. Esposito Is my Kentucky Deby horse , he's by Za Approval so he has a lot to live up to. Rafha is my 1m2f horse who is by my group one horse from last season Shady Heights, will love soft ground like her dad did last season. Coigach is returning to go for the Gold Cup, her son Alcazar is in my team. They will be my first mum and son in my team ever. Bella Betina and Tedburrow Wish are my 5 and 6 furlong horses are by my top 2yo sprinter last Year Tebdurrow. So they are keeping it in the family. Nibbs Point is my 1m6 horse, she is well over a year old and because she's been throught so many final's she deserves a place in my team. |
