Flat
Race 1 Brooklyn 1m 2f Dirt 3yo - Marvelous Trail - 3rd - Very pleased with this run. Badly baulked so my 3yos may not be that far behind
Race 3 Goodwood 1mile 3yo (Good) - Homecoming Bues - 10th - Probably need to ignore this run as was held up and ran wide
Race 5 Goodwood 6f 2yo (Good) - California Bound - 7th - 5f horse and it showed when she faded. Don't have any good 2yo sprinters
Race 7 Brooklyn 1m 4f 4up Dirt - Queen of Night - 1st - Ultra impresive. If she can win here she will be a real force at Ascot and Longchamp. In League Team
Race 9 Goodwood 2m 2f (Good) - Dragon Keeper - 2nd - Great run to be denied by what looks like a good one of Ryans. Best over 2 miles and in league team to defend Melbourne Cup
Race 11 Brooklyn 1m 1f 2yo Turf Good - Across the Lines - 4th - Looks like my staying 2yos may be competitive

Looks like I have made great strides with my 3yos, but my strength is still my older horses

Jumps
Race 2 Cheltenham 2m 1f Hurdle 5up (Soft) - Understory Rebel - F - Doesn't like the old course and have better but haven't improved by much
Race 4 Brooklyn 2m 1f Chase 5up (Soft) - Chess - 3rd - Seems to reserve best for league environment. Possible returnee as not my best distance
Race 6 Cheltenham 2m 4f Hurdle (Soft) - Stop Messing Around - 1st - Game winner. Currently not in league team but may find a spot for him
Race 8 Cheltenham 2m 5f Chase (Soft) - Machengoidi - 6th - Not as good at 8 and his proximity to the winner bodes well for my league chances over this distance
Race 10 Cheltenham 3m 1f Hurdle (Soft) - Night and Day - 6th - Nowhere near as good at 8 as 7. His run means I think I may be very competitive over 3m hurdles in league
Race 12 Cheltenham 3m 5f (Soft) - GI Joe - 1st - League star. Better jumper at 8 and if the ground is soft will be a force but Flashpoint is a lot better and will need soft ground to give Flashpoint a race

Thanks to Gray Martin and Ryan for doing the races.

Good luck to all for the league

Post Re: Trials Day 3 Races Live 12pm UK Time
Since I did not have time to do a preview you can get it all as a review.

Flat out tired of it all

Race 1 Brooklyn 1m 2F Dirt 3yo – The Living Legend 3yo C - 1st

Delighted with this run, this recent addition to my ranks is one of those rare breeds where the foal progresses beyond the parents, in this case hitting the heady heights of 97% potential, the only horse I have that gets this high. Yet to get anything much out of him in a game I am retiring after this round of trials. Will look too the Kentucky Derby.

Race 3 Goodwood 1mile 3yo (Good) – Jealous 3yo F - 9th

Little disappointing this, but I do take a little from her being the 3rd fillie home, never really got going, though just as likely my 1m horses are no good.

Race 5 Goodwood 6f 2yo (Good) – Coffee And Biscuits 2yo C - 10th

This is the oldest 2yo in my export bin, indeed I actually had this horse when picking my last team and he was not up to snuff then, sort of shows how poor my flat game is, since he now stands alone as my best 2yo sprinter. O dear.

Race 7 Brooklyn 1m 4f 4UP Dirt – Belladona 4yo M - 9th

The poor old girl is going to struggle this year, though remains likely to be my only returning horse. Cannot cope with the older combined game flat types, sad to see.

Race 9 Goodwood 2m 2f (Good) – Stay For Another 4yo S - 8th

The potential in my flat game remains in decline, one fluke breed aside where the potential actually uplifted most of my horses now stop at about 90-92% and there are early signs that 88% is on the cards, will not matter as the game is a write off but frustrating as hell to play and is really taking my interest from the SO7 crap shoot in general. My stayers do not get beyond 80% and this chap really does not get much beyond 2m. Will be plotting for the big 2m handicap races.

Race 11 Brooklyn 1m 1f 2yo Turf Good) – Slambo 2yo C - 7th

Needs 1.2m really and was exposed today, my 2yo's are mostly rubbish anyway.

I was never all that interested in flat racing, but the changes made for SO7 have pretty much taken what little interest I have, I am even debating not bothering with entering a team, and every time I tell myself one more round of breeding maybe I'll hit gold, I keep getting further pissed off as I watch yet another round of horses in decline. Amusingly my cast offs which I now sell into the game as a rule win 20-30 G1's such is the lack of game talent produced. Handicaps if I can even be bothered.

Jump ing through hoops

Race 2 Cheltenham 2m 1f Hurdle 5UP (Soft) – Kingdom of Trouble 8yo G - 3rd

Nice enough performance. Up until my last trail was the king of my 2m hurdlers, and has bred hundreds of slightly worse versions of himself, two trails back he breed one who measured up and that horse has breed 3 or 4 who now take his crown. He rates 6th in my overall list now, but I figure you can split the difference with a cigarette paper. 2m hurdle glory does not look on the cards this season.

Race 4 Brooklyn 2m 1f Chase 5UP (Soft) – The Predator 8yo G - 1st

Typical sort of run from him and very happy to steal a win. From last seasons sucessful 2m chasers came a couple of horses who defined my breeding for about 15 years, this was one of them and he has had his hand in some real stars over the years. One of those two still hangs onto a team slot right now, this chap does not rating 7th overall on my list. Still they are all basically clones of each other, look the same run the same etc so really he shows about the level of my 2m horses. Likely my strongest area.

Race 6 Cheltenham 2m 4F Hurdle (Soft) – Tally Ho Chaps 8yo G - 2nd

Not a natural front runner, usually just hangs off the pace, but took this on as nothing else did and but for some slow final jumps could have taken the win. My 2.4m hurders are prety sound, hailing back to my sucesses last season, though I cannot breed it down into my 2m types for love nor money. But it is an area that has been stuck now for some time, since my two main breeding colts have never bred anything of note (this chap is one of them) there are 6/7 who consistently top the trials, and each cycle I just swap out the lower places. He rates 7th on the overall list, now but moves up and down from trial to trial.

Race 8 Cheltenham 2m 5f Chase (Soft) – The Courtesan 8yo M - 5th

Respectable showing from this girl, I do not expect she will even be in the export bin by the time I pick my team though. She is new and was bred as a 3m horse, failed, as I have been gradually taking my 2m stock up the distances, I broken into the 3m tier quite recently with another from her generation. She ranks 8th on the trial list and is a long way off the top 6 at this distance.

Race 10 Cheltenham 3m 1f Hurdle (Soft) – Three White Feathers 8yo G - 5th

Decent enough run, but never really looked too threaterning. New bred onto the lists and is part of an experimental programme to uplift my 3m hurdlers who have pretty much plateaued from last season. This guy ranks 6th again and in not in the team list right now, likely a stepping stone bred.

Race 12 Cheltenham 3m 5f (Soft) – Paradise Lost 8yo G - Fell

Meh, the one horse I wanted to see finish, just to get a measure of GI Joe. Rates 3rd of 4 on my 3.4m trials, but is close enough to the top two to have been interesting here, long since parted company with him and he has no chance of a league slot anyway.

All round the shine is well and truly off SO7 for me, though my jump game is an entirely different animal to my flat game, but I know deep down it is just about luck of the draw and I have not seen a decent injection of new blood for about 15+ seasons now, but am still dining off old breeds and basically squeezing every last drop out of my existing lines. Think it will be a hotly contested league season based on evidence so far, though I also expect the main players are keeping their powder dry :). Back to breeding my army of clones, but it is generally pointless, futile and not very enjoyable.

Thanks to Grey for the effort and great comms by both (but turn the volume down on the sound effects for the closing stages as you lose the voiceover a little)

Josh

Thanks for the feedback on the comms Josh - I'm new to it using Audacity and the sound effects so will ask Martin how I go about turning down the volume on the sound effects.

Post Re: Trials Day 3 Races Live 12pm UK Time
As for my runners in trials day 3, I have to say I'm over the moon with the overall performance of the squad and it was definitely my best trials week of the three.

Main highlights were:

Vieux Carre (2m2f Goodwood) 1st - was not expecting a win although I was feeling more confident in my staying division after American Woman finished 3rd last trials day. This showed me that was no fluke and even though this horse is nowhere near having a full potential bar, he is a group standard horse for the league and with no more time to play ahead of the league starting he is 100% going into the league team. I know Leon has better stayers but to hold off Dragon Keeper was a real surprise and showed me he has the quality.

Take The Knee (2m5f chase Chelts) 2nd - reminded me of the good old days battling against Hemz up the cheltenham hill. On this occasion it wasn't to be, Cheekz Gold was a good winner for one of the top NH trainers SO has seen and so to run him right to the line is a great run, especially given his early jumping was questionable to say the least. He'll be in my league team.

Sauce It Up (3m1f Cheltenham) 2nd - Thought this mare had it, she's my best staying hurdler and the extra furlong cost her the race, simple as that. If the ground is soft or better she'll hopefully go to the World Hurdle with a real live chance although I do appreciate other trainers may be saving their big hitters for the league.

Tides Out (12f Brooklyn) 2nd - as much of a shock as American Woman's run in the 14f last time. I thought the 10f races offered me no hope at all but actually it seems as though my older horses do have potential to run well in some of these races and Tides Out is probably 3/4th best in my CK over 12, I chose him for this race due to the race style rather than putting a hold up horse in - mine aren't quite as special as Leon's to win from the back with no run through like his mare did. He may still go in my team and i just hope my older 8-10f horses can cut it as well - the 3yos are definitely a different story though and won't be anywhere near as competitive.

Living Legend (6f Goodwood 2yo) 4th - he came to win it and follow up on his win the last time out, I thought he was going to win when he hit the front but the final half furlong got him. He's a 5f specialist at 2 and 6f specialist at 3 and I have to think long and hard over the next two weeks as to which age to enter him at. On the one hand there are more G1 prizes up for grabs at 6f 3+ compared to 5f 2yo but I know how good Vinny's 6f sprinters are as well as some other trainers' sprinters so I'm leaning towards 2yo at the moment (I could always bring him back at 3 anyway). Going to trial some 6f races on Aussie courses to see if he has a chance at those types of G1 2yo race as he did still finish ahead of other juvenile colts in this race. Star of my stable and believe he will pick up the most places for me in the league.

Other good runs included Our Connie (fluffed the last or would have finished top 5) , Alice in Wonderland (fluffed 3 out badly at Brooklyn or would have finished very close to the winner) , and Hurricane Fly (very close 6th and i have better in CK) so overall a great week.

Looking forward to the league starting, have the schedules downloaded to help me pick my team and plot some big races for the stable stars. Can't believe how many races there are each week. this is going to be a whole lotta fun!

I have no doubt the main stables have all kept their stars away from the trials and I have put my best forward each time (or best at the track/ground for each trial) so I cannot expect each week will see my as prominent as this round of trials. But it has shown that i've improved and have enough good horses to make the time i've put in worthwhile as we approach the season. Glad to be back, happy to help with as many comms as I can, and good luck to every trainer!

Ry

Pretty sure you will enjoy success this season, the trials should still be considered as group races in my view, regardless of horses being held back.

Agree. NH I didn't run my best but Queen of Night is definitely one of my best. Dragon Keeper is also a proven league horse and is in my league team..

I'm sure Craig ran his best and his 2 mile horses have passed mine. Unfortunately I haven't improved much past UG's level

Absolutely see them as being a great indicator and I have gone from aiming at handicaps and just being involved to challenging myself to land a group race and maybe even a top 10 finish in the trainer table.

It’s going to be a great season, some awesome horses involved.

My staying chasers are awful but even if I had a good one it wouldn’t get near GI Joe!

Post Re: Trials Day 3 Races Live 12pm UK Time
Some good positive signs this week albeit frustrating ones as well.

Looks to be shaping up for a ultra competitive season ahead.

Flat Horses

Race 1 - 1m2f 3yo
Waltz Sandhurst 5th - Came into the final stretch looking good but just faded out in the end. He trailed well on this course in my trails and maybe didn't like the dirt after all. This is one of my weakest divisions in my flat team. Work to be done in the coming weeks. I've better ones for the turf races for 3yo only races.

Race 3 - 1m 3yo
Inverted Appeal 8th - Goodwood is a nightmare course for hold up horses over shorter trips. This boy had no sort of run whatsoever and still managed to be within 2L of the leading pack. Get him on a straight track and you will see what he can do. Really like my 3yo milers and very much looking forward to the classics coming up.

Race 5 - 6f 2yo
Grovey Project 3rd - Nice effort in 3rd place and ran out of gas in the last .5f. Cannot wait to see her on the track has a 3yo, main targets will be all the 1000 guineas races and will compete against the elders later on in the season.

Race 7 - 1m4f 4yo+
Trojan Attack 7th - Looked good coming to the final furlong were he just got out paced. Looks like he is more of a stayer than a middle distance horse at 4. Will be in my team as a 3yo, main targets will be the Irish Derby, St Ledger and the top 2m staying races. He's just entered my breeding barn and his offspring look great.

Race 9 - 2m2f 4yo+
Redruth Skye 4th - Nice effort in 4th place and thought she may have done a little better. I've a feeling she's one of those who races well in trails but come league time not that good. She will kore than likely be in my team for the upcoming season. Nice win Ryan :)

Race 11 - 1m1f 2yo
Sequel Eclipse 2nd - Great effort by this girl just getting touched off close home. Need to decide on whether to enter her has a 2yo or a 6yo for the 1m2f races. She's a very classy individual and should win some nice races either as a 2yo or an older mare.

NH Jumpers

Race 2 - 2m1fH 5yo+
Rule Of Maze 7m 1st - Very pleasing run by one of my top 5 2m hurdlers. She won that with a bit to spare in the end and shows how far my 2mH have progressed. It's even more exciting I'm still getting better coming in. I should have a very good season with my open and novice horses over this distance for the season ahead. That Champion Hurdle race could be on it's way back to Hemsworth Farms

Race 4 - 2m1fC - 5yo+
Making Memories 7m 2nd - Excellent effort from a new recruit who only recently came into the CK and never trailed on this course. Backs up my theory that I've some serious talent over this 2mC division. Very similar to my 2mH. She will more than likely be in my novice team but I'm seeing improvements coming in often so who knows. Another area I'm very excited about for the league.

Race 6 - 2m4fH
Playful Wisdom 7m 4th/Shameful Junkie 3rd - Respectable placings this week and wasn't beaten far at all, jockeys gave them quite a bit to do. These two will more than likely enter my novice ranks. I've so much trailing to do over this distance and figure out my team before the season kicks off. Signs are promising I could have a good team of 2m4H for open and novice races.

Race 8 - 2m5fC 5yo+
Cheekz Gold 7m 1st - Very gusty win this week and maybe was in the lead a little earlier than liked. But she stayed up that hill stoutly. Will be in my league team. Another area which needs trail time and working out. That was a close one Ryan. Your team as progressed very well and you should be in for a great season.

Race 10 - 3m1fH 5yo+
Indochina Felice 7h 3rd/Time Is Given 4th - Another solid efforts by my 3mH this week. Slightly confused by Indochina Felice run been a front runner and sitting out the back and staying on well in the closing stages. Time Is Given is an old horse from many seasons ago and wanted to see how he would fair for my novice team. He's a very consistent performer still in my trails.

Race 12 - 3m5fC 5yo+
Caring Emma 7m Fell/Plague Runner 4th - Little disappointed about the fall of Caring Emma. She's been showing up well in my staying races. Plague Runner didn't seem to stay this trip and will be dropped back down in trip. he will be in my team this season. Have work to do still with my 3mC+ horses, going to have to trail a lot to figure out who's my best at what age.

Thanks to the team (Gray/Martin/Ryan) as always. Nice comms Ryan and good to see you back in the league along with Mr Hooley.

Good luck in the coming weeks ahead all. Plenty of breeding time left before we kick into the new season.

Post Re: Trials Day 3 Races Live 12pm UK Time
Race 1 - 1m2f 3yo
6th - San Diego Fury - Ran the strangest race of all mine, sitting handy in about 4th, the Jockey decided to just sit tight and let him end up in last about 4 out when the race developed. Little bit worrying if it was just outpaced as it's one of my best in my trials. May need more pace in the race, maybe just given a bad ride as he made no effort to scrub along to hold position at all, hoping the latter, I had high hopes for my 10f horses too

Race 3 - 1m 3yo
4th Shenzhen Stardust - Her 2nd attempt at the trials, ran ok, not my best miler but the most suited by Goodwood. Another seemingly a bit caught for pace as it unravelled, but stayed on again. I don't expect anything from my milers this season, handicappers at best, definitely my worst distance

Race 5 - 6f 2yo
1st Nanching Enthrall - Only trialled my 2yo horses in the last couple of weeks. I had nearly 2000 to do, having not entered any last season. This was definitely the standout. Very surprised she won this as she's a lot better over 7f, or a stiff 6f. Never expected anything at Goodwood. Think the early race had a lot taking each other on, which plays into the hands of my lot. A very versatile 2yo, able to run over 6,7, an 8 but didn't train on to 3 at all which was a shame. Almost certain to make the league team and should be a big threat at Ascot an Newmarket etc..

Race 7 - 1m4f 4yo+
5th Cincinatti Raven - Ran wide an hit all kinds of trouble, could have gone closer, Very pleased with that run on a track that probably didn't suit

Race 9 - 2m2f 4yo+
5th Darwin Starlet - Ran a steady race. Only played a few seasons in my stayers race since the start of last season so nice to see he was up there. next couple of weeks will be dedicated to the stayers so hopefully will improve there

Race 11 - 1m1f 2yo
8th Modesto Cherry - I trialled on Goodwood for this race, and it was very rushed, definitely have better horses in the barn as I hadn't finished going through all my 2yos at the time. Hopeful for league at best though.
