Sorry guys missed the stream last night.

Thoroughly delighted with Clipthorne Rosejen, 3rd in the 1m2. Jockey may not get booked again. ha

Unfortunately, all of my older horses are complete garbage. Hopefully these will come with time.

I have a question about 2 year olds. Currently, mine dominate the early maidens and novice races Jan to March, 5,6,7f by mostly 2-5 lengths.

I then don't bother entering them in any of the group races over the summer, in 5,6,7f as it's a waste of time, the odd one I chance, but majority they just aren't up to it.

Then when it comes to the mile races at the back end of the season, the horses fire all round them, Curragh, Newmarket, Woodbine, Longchamp & Breeders cup. i'm surprised if i don't pick up at least a good few of the Group 1's & 2's.

Any advice on how to improve the sprinters? I had the same in a non-league game, i can't produce sprinters for toffee!

Thanks

Connor

Are you playing a flat only game or combined?

In terms of sprinters it took me a while of searching but I finally found a game stallion that produced a big improvement on what I had. The key is being in a position to take advantage of that stallion. I had saved up a lot mares where their breeding had a few game stallions in, who had all improved my sprinters before. For example, say I had 4 game stallions that had all improved my lines in the past. I keep mares, even if they were no good in my trials that had a mix of those 4 game stallions in their breeding (or as many as possible). Those mares are key once you find the next stallion, every time I got a good improvement, it was with mares that didn't trial well, but had all those key stallions in the breeding.

This isn't exclusive to sprinters obviously, but my sprint game (flat only) has produced some decent league horses, despite the running style not really suiting.

To find the game stallions at the start of every season I;

1. go to my breeding and list the game stallions in group win order. Breed with anything 8 group1 wins an over. Or any with a really good strike rate, i.e won 15 of it's 20 races despite not winning a lot of GP1's.
2. change the view to the progeny data screen. Anything that has produced over 15 group1 winners I use too. Especially anything young (under 10yo)
3. Finally I click on the overall Breeding tab at the top, make sure you're on the stallion individual data screen for this. The UK one you will have already checked, but put them in group winning order again. Then flick through each of the country's. You will get to see all the very best foreign horses this way, and you definitely want to breed with these. Anything above 5 group1 wins I tend to use here. This one is quite important in my opinion.

All this is just my way of saying, use as many game stallions as you can, always, even when you have established lines. They are massively important. Also keep an eye on the ones that are improving your lines, as their mares (even if no good themselves) are important to your long term lines.

Sorry for the waffle :)

I am running a combined game.

The mares is an interesting one. What i have been doing is trialing everything against my bench marks, anything that beats them I keep, and they become the new bench marks. This generally leaves me between 10-15 horses to run the season with.

I then do a second round of trials and any mares, in the top 3, I keep for breeding, anything else I discard. This generally leaves me about 20 mares each year.

Once they hit 8, they get reviewed, if they have produced a group winner they stay, if not, they get retired. At 10 all of these mares get retired. If the mare comes from one that was kept from running, then they can stay in there until they hang up their shoes.

If you are keeping all mares you send to trials, your breeding barn must be stacked to the rafters???

Mine is running about 230 at the moment.

Stallions, I generally have followed the same principle, although i have about 20 of my own at stud. My thinking behind these, is that yes they are not world beaters in either the trials or in the game, but they have performed well enough, won a few group 1's etc and that they will at least put a bottom on my horses that I am breeding.

And with the stallions I generally have 3 categories of mares for them;

1. New 2 year olds - only get bred with new game bred stallions that come in that season - this is to try and keep the bloodlines fresh
2. Any top Game performers - the stallion is specifically picked for them which usually ends in disaster
3. Those in between get my stallions, new stallions to the bar, plus those that basically meet the criteria that you stipulated. Some rules such as don't cross a 2m horse with a 5f horse etc

As structured as all that sounds, it is still a bit throw mud at the wall and see what sticks.

Is there anything I can specifically look out for, in terms of traits from the stallions improving lines, etc, etc, anything at all would be much appreciated.

Also, will the CK and the game ever align in terms of quality of horses. I.e. from my trials, at the end of the season, i run them against each other & against bench marks again. If they are good enough, they get kept, if not, they are deleted from that exported place. (I am ruthless, but it's like real life, you have to be, 3 runs, if no potential for racing, off to be a polo pony!)

Now i quite often find, my best horse in Game, is never my best horse in the CK, which frustrates the life out of me.

Apologies for all the questions, new to this carry on.

Thanks

Connor

I don't keep all mares I send to trials, I keep the ones that do well in the trails. The Mares are kept if they finish in top 5 in a few races of the 15 I run against my very best horses for each distance. I also keep the ones with all those game stallions in I mentioned, even if they're no good.

Those mares with the good breeding but aren't great in the trials, I only breed with game stallions. They tend not to go to my own stallions unless I an trying to produce horses that combine all those game stallions from the past in their lines (hope that makes sense)

My best sprinters have pretty much never been bred from a very good mare, they are almost always from one of the mares I mention above, that has done nothing at all in trials. But they are always bred with the right Stallion that improves the lines. I find that stallion then produces a lot of mares that of very high standard. Those Mares allow you to keep your lines at that standard, you'll see slight improvements, or a lot of depth being produced at that level, but it's tough to find a colt that goes beyond. It's how you use those new mares then with gasme stallions, and trying to mix the breeding up with your own stallions, that should get you your next level colt. I simply rinse an repeat this.

This is in a flat only game for my sprinters and has worked very well in the league. It seems to keep all my lines fresh an easy to keep them going. I never played any of my other games anywhere near enough to be as good as my sprinters, but I imagine the same principle work.

I have just started again completely with a combined game only, and already I have started beating all distances except sprinters. I have still found 1 sprint colt that is very competitive, within 12 seasons so it's looking promising, and I'm using the same principles. I will only be keeping my sprint game from the flat only, and maybe use a couple that have very strong 2yo lines going, but only use them for 2yos.

You have to clear out the mares each season doing it this way as it can get out of hand. Anything that hasn't produced a decent horse in a few seasons I tend to get rid of as I know the principles should work, so it's likely just no good.

Look to try an mix running styles up a bit too. If you have a good front runner, obviously try an enhance that with other front runners. But I always try to mix an match too, so try an get strong travelling horses in with it, and really strong finishing horses. These wont work as often, but you're looking to mix as many 'hidden attributes' in as possible. So I always try it. Also found early on that mixing sprinters with 2m+ horses was giving me all my best middle distance horses, so I'd definitely give mixing up distances a try too, it's a good way to mix the attributes up again.

The CK will never likely align with the game form unfortunately. Those trials will always be vital.

If there's any more I'll try an help with what I do, others will likely have other ways of doing things an hearing different versions will likely help you develop your own style.

Have you any tips on how best to identify running styles?

Another note, when i trial my 2 year olds at the start of their 2 year old year. I have my benchmarks, and anything that beats my bench marks they get kept for racing.

The second set of trials are done and the mares which score are put to the breeding barn.

Everything else gets scrapped.

I've read in these forums, that horses trial differently at different ages, which is logical, now my question, should i be scrapping the rest of the horses, or should i be giving them 3 races as a 2 year old, 3 as a 3 year old, then export them and trial them all again?

Or am i correct in thinking that if they are no good as a 2 year old, they suddenly won't become superstars in the CK as 3 year olds?

Next question, I always keep 2 year olds through and trial at the end of the year again. However 3 year olds for example, if they don't win a G1 in the game, i normally retire them on the thinking that if they can't win a G1 in game, then they will have no hope in the CK/League. What's your thoughts?

I keep all my 2yo's and 3yo's to be trialled at end of season, I will only keep the best trialling 3yo's at 4up.

Some horses are great in the game and terrible in the CK, some are mediocre in the game and great in the CK. You need to trial all 3yo's in CK to find out.

I trial all my 2yos, but keep them all to trial at 3. I know some do the early trials but I've never got rid of 2yo's, so couldn't comment on this

I use comments from the race to determine running styles, and I always watch the big race meetings in games. hover over a horses form for each race it tells you how it runs. So held up late headway etc. Or ran from the front. I always try an mix these with ones that say held up, but seem to move through the field easy. Those are for travelling speed which is important.
