2013 Horses
Older Division Aegaeus Monsun x Ouija Board – 14.02.2009 – Bay gelding Ed Dunlop This son of Monsun always looked a long-term project and after a summer break and gelding operation, he hinted more than once that the ability was certainly there to exploit a mid-seventies handicap mark, once everything clicked. Confidence of a win to now take forward, the form of which has worked out strongly since and taken to prove himself a progressive handicapper this season. DROPPED - Has his own ideas about racing, which continue to hold him back from fulfilling his potential and as such, no longer appears worth giving chances too. Biographer Montjeu x Reflective – 13.03.2009 – Bay colt David Lanigan Never stopped improving last season, making huge strides that culminated in a very cosy listed success. Trainer has always been adamant that given the opportunity of better ground, we'll see a better horse still and certainly seems capable of pattern success this season; potentially even making up into a smart cup horse with further progress looking a distinct likelihood. Bishop Roko Rock Of Gibraltar x Kirk – 28.02.2009 – Bay gelding Roger Charlton Caught the eye as a juvenile and showed why last season when spread-eagling a maiden field that contained a number of future winners. An injury on the gallops followed and a setback to his recovery resulted in him ultimately being sidelined for the remainder of the season. Returned this season, he could yet still prove the smart middle-distance prospect he shaped as on debut. Caravan Rolls On Hernando x Grain Only – 31.01.2008 – Bay horse Peter Chapple-Hyam Highly progressive with racing two seasons ago and purchased by Pearl Bloodstock for good money thereafter to target staying prizes. Returned from a year absence in pleasing fashion and desperately unlucky not to back-up on Town Moor. While clearly not the easiest to keep sound, if able to sustain his racing better this season, I have no doubt he'll end the year rated a good deal higher than the low-nineties mark he starts it on. DROPPED - Proving to be very hard to win with this season, his progress appearing to have now stalled and with the market alive to his capabilities, he is just not value to follow any longer. Continuum Dansili x Clepsydra – 22.04.2009 – Bay colt Lady Cecil From a smart Juddmonte bloodline responsible for Group 1 winners Passage Of Time and Timepiece, not to mention Group 2 winner Father Time and highly regarded from the very beginning. However, soundness and immaturity leave him yet to see a racecourse (not a strictly true statement as some may recall shoegate), but hopefully this season he will be able to make up for lost time and prove worth the wait. Hajras Dubai Destination x Nufoos – 11.05.2009 – Bay gelding Mark Johnston On the go the entirety of last season, but held his form to the very end, enjoying four wins along the way. Often set a lot to do, in defeat and in victory, thus concern must be how much of a mark 2012 left on the son of Dubai Destination, and slightly surprising to see him gelded over the winter, but interesting to see if he can complete the graduation to pattern company nonetheless. Hanseatic Galileo x Insinuate – 26.03.2009 – Bay colt John Gosden Always showed potential behind closed doors, but differing issues meant it was a while before that was able to be transferred to the racecourse. Showed immaturity amid inexperience on debut, but the experience alone should have done wonders and this scopey sort could prove to be very well treated from an opening mark of seventy-nine, for all that a bit more track-craft and know-how may need to be need gathered along the way. Malekov Dansili x Young And Daring – 11.04.2009 – Bay colt Lady Cecil Late maturing type who took a big step forward from debut to land a maiden at Salisbury, before following up on handicap debut, despite sporting a far more experienced field lengths out the gate. Got stuck in the mud on his final start of the year, but looks a staying handicap prospect with a lot more to offer and thus, one to keep firmly onside for the season ahead; certainly when a sound surface is on offer anyway. DROPPED - I had fairly high expectations heading into this season, but alas, the son of Dansili is no longer in training. Model Pupil Sinndar x Modesta – 12.03.2009 – Bay colt Charlie Hills The trademark of his maiden win and Chester Vase reverse was undoubtedly his likeable attitude and was considered a St Leger candidate in the making, when a pelvic injury curtailed those aspirations. Unsurprisingly in need of the race on his return and with another winter on his back, not to mention more time for healing and strengthening, it's hoped that this son of Sinndar can still cash in on the undoubted potential that merited Classic consideration last year. DROPPED - Proving to be unreliable and although has made some headway as a stayer, he still looks rather hit and miss under pressure, as a result of that serious injury sustained last season. Shamahan Shamardal x Hanella – 09.03.2009 – Bay colt Gary Moore Always well regarded at this yard, but a chipped bone ended his juvenile campaign and early season didn't go to plan either, resulting in him needing the race badly on seasonal debut. Things went from bad to worse when he picked up another injury in soft ground on his next start, ruling him out for the season remaining. Gelded over the winter and handicap mark remains very workable if none the worse for wear; handled by a shrewd trainer, but good fast ground is a necessity. DROPPED - Plagued by soundness issues that look to have caught up with him, as just hasn't gone on this season, from a promising reappearance.
Classic Division - Raced Abated Dansili x Tantina – 11.05.2010 – Bay filly Roger Charlton Full sister to Bated Breath and half-sister to Cityscape, who shaped better than her finishing position on debut and was too free second time around. Late foal and late into training so no surprise she was on the weak side last season and now physically with the benefit of another winter on her, a maiden win shouldn't be far away; then onwards and upwards with a bit of luck. DROPPED - Needed the benefit of a track bias and two lowly opponents to get her head in front at last and ultimately isn't very good, thus is certainly not worth following any more. Amralah Teofilo x Sharp Mode – 11.03.2010 – Bay colt Mick Channon From a smart family responsible for Reams Of Verse and Elmaamul and well regarded from early doors last season; shaping with considerable promise on debut, but held up by a setback thereafter. Forced to battle on ground he hated, returned in a back-season maiden, but battle he did and headed into this season with some lofty aspirations, but soundness issues continue and an Autumn campaign is most likely at this stage. Aussie Lyrics Aussie Rules x Operam – 11.04.2010 – Grey colt George Baker Likeable unfurnished type who is a half-brother to a multiple winner in France and who made a taking debut at Leicester, considerably outperforming his odds to finish a respectable fourth in a solid enough race. Comfortably claimed a lesser contest at Lingfield next time, from a future winner and looks to have considerable improvement to come, making his opening assessment of seventy-seven appear workable heading into the new season. DROPPED - So disappointing that this colt has not trained on in the manner expected, looking slow and awkward in his two starts this season, and having to be harsh in my culling of this division, he had to go. Autun Empire Maker x Sense Of Joy – 19.02.2010 – Bay colt Lady Cecil First foal of a smart race-mare who was pitched into a strong maiden on debut, but was simply too backward to ever land a blow. Learnt from the experience to collect next time out, battling well and winning a shade cosily, despite apparent greenness still and type to keep improving with racing. Opening mark of seventy-nine looks lenient and would expect this horse to progress far beyond that initial assessment as the season goes on. DROPPED - Another who has disappointed in handicap company, from a lenient opening mark, not progressing as had hoped and not appeared totally genuine in his two outings thus far for 2013. Big Break Dansili x Fame At Last – 06.04.2010 – Bay filly Dermot Weld Full-sister to the highly talented Famous Name who came to the track with a big reputation, but had to wait to show why after a poor ride in poorer conditions saw her fail to sparkle. No mistake second time around when coming away from an ordinary field, but showed her true worth when dispatching the boys to collect a Group 3, despite not acting fully in conditions. A Classic campaign awaits this smart filly in the coming months and on juvenile impressions, she is a leading player in that rank. Bright Glow Exceed And Excel x Lighthouse – 13.02.2010 – Chestnut filly David Lanigan 170,000gns filly, related to numerous winners and who made late gains on debut under considerate handling. Repeat story six weeks later, before taking a step forward on her third start, coming up short only to a filly who had the run of the race. Assessed in the mid-sixties but homework has often hinted at her ability equalling more and with that education now in the locker and another year on her back, could well take advantage of a lenient looking mark. Cape Peron Beat Hollow x Free Offer – 27.01.2010 – Bay gelding Henry Candy First foal who made an eye-catching debut last back-end, splitting two experienced yardsticks in third, the front four pulling readily clear of the field. He traveled well throughout and kept to task pleasingly under a hand ride, over a trip that was more than likely sharp enough. Certainly capable of landing a maiden if going forward from that, especially when tasked with tackling trips at a mile and beyond. Contributer High Chaparral x Serisia – 20.02.2010 – Bay colt Ed Dunlop 130,000gns son of High Chaparral who overcome a slow start to come home well in a strong midsummer maiden on the July course. A setback curtailed any plans for the remainder of the turf season, but returned to claim an AW maiden in mid-November in fine style and from a mid-eighties starting point, looks the type with plenty more to come this season, especially once upped to middle-distances. Demonic Dansili x Bionic – 29.01.2010 – Bay colt Lady Cecil Half-brother to the smart Phoenix Tower from a strong Juddmonte bloodline, and highly regarded at Warren Place since day one. Disappointing therefore that he failed to show why on debut late last season, clueless from the start and none more so than under pressure, but was never going to make much impact as a juvenile and should have learnt plenty so well worth sticking with to set the record straight in the months ahead. Emperical Oasis Dream x Kalima – 14.05.2010 – Bay colt Lady Cecil Half-brother to the enigma that is Jet Away who showed plenty to like on debut, raw, but able to race up with a strong pace and run to the line; not beaten far despite being drawn poorly over a track and trip that didn't particularly play to his strengths. Another who was never going to make much impact as a juvenile, but who now with the addition of another winter could rise through the ranks this coming season to a reasonable enough level. More of a handicap project admittedly, but should progress throughout the season. Enobled Dansili x Peeress – 02.05.2010 – Bay colt Sir Michael Stoute Half-brother to Ladyship, who came to hand nicely in the latter part of last season and made a debut full of promise not long after; green and coming from a long way back, but with a strong run that he maintained to the line. Winner set a good standard, second won easily since and had some nice types in behind, so the future looks bright if able to build on that introduction this coming season. First Secretary Nayef x Spinning Queen – 07.02.2010 – Bay filly Roger Charlton Well-bred daughter of Nayef who is a half-sister to the useful Clarehaven duo, Gallipot and Trade Commissioner, but never got the opportunity to show her worth on debut; drawn poorly and forced to race four and five wide the entire way, before being forced wider still on the home turn, thus spared a hard time thereafter. Much more to offer than was even hinted at that day and one that could well go under the radar. Goodwood Mirage Jeremy x Phantom Waters – 22.03.2010 – Bay colt William Knight Related to a couple of winners and started his career as then trainer John Dunlop ended his; now switched to the care of William Knight. Prominently positioned on debut, but unsurprisingly green and outpaced at halfway, looking to have lost all chance, before staying on strongly in the closing stages to win going away, once the penny dropped. The fact that he was able to win on debut, over that trip, from the stable he did suggests he could be an exciting prospect to have on-side this year. Glorious Protector Azamour x Hasaiyda – 22.02.2010 – Bay colt Ed Walker Imposing son of Azamour who hails from an Aga Khan bloodline and reported to be adored by his handler before debut. Introduced into a strong maiden and performed far better than finishing position suggested; keen towards the rear, never put into the race, but travelling strongly and running on well for a hand ride. Weather prevented him building on that thereafter, but strongly suspect he will this season and another who could fly below the radar. Green Monkey Green Desert x Firenze – 15.04.2010 – Bay gelding James Fanshawe Half-brother to Isola Verde, out of connections' smart sprinter Firenze, herself a full sister to July Cup winner, Frizzante, not to mention a half-sister to another smart sprinter in the shape of Zidane. Clearly had training issues as carried a ridiculous amount of condition on debut late last season; unsurprisingly fading out of contention quickly and allowed to coast home in his own time. Gelded over the winter and potentially a long term prospect, but this well-bred son of Green Desert could prove progressive in time. Hillstar Danehill Dancer x Crystal Star – 22.02.2010 – Bay colt Sir Michael Stoute Half-brother to connections' talented mare, Crystal Capella, and offered plenty promise at home, prior to making a promising debut that merited more; making good headway when short of room and finding momentum checked. Built on that next time with a narrow, but commanding win over a decent yardstick who was afforded the run of the race; well on top at the line. Likely to want a sterner stamina test this season and this Derby-entered colt could be let in lightly off an opening assessment of eighty-three. Homage Acclamation x Night Sphere – 23.04.2010 – Bay colt Jeremy Noseda Nice son of Acclamation who improved with every outing during his juvenile season; green on debut, but showing plenty promise. Built on that with a sound second in a decent contest at Newbury, before recording his win at Kempton in a good time; idling in front, but comfortably holding a decent opponent in the end, despite having travelled wide throughout. Opening mark in the high-seventies looks workable and could make into a progressive handicap sprinter this year; certainly in the right hands to do so. Kyllachy Rise Kyllachy x Up And About – 10.04.2010 – Bay colt Richard Hannon Half-brother to some useful types, most notably Tamarillo, and who hails from the family of the talented stayer, Royal Gait. Showed plenty of promise on the practice grounds prior to pleasing debut at Goodwood, where he was noted travelling well towards the rear, one of the last off the bridle and finishing well from an unpromising position to take fourth. That was a good contest packed with nice types and this son of Kyllachy is open to significant improvement now a year older, with that outing under his belt. DROPPED - Started the season with very high expectations, but a change of yard and some disappointing placement means I can longer stick with the son of Kyllachy, but if the rain fell, I wouldn't put anyone off keeping the faith for one last go, in the right race obviously. Lemon Pearl Singspiel x Basemah – 12.04.2010 – Chestnut filly Ralph Beckett Daughter of Singspiel from family of smart middle-distance hold-up performer, Spout. Did well simply to make the track as a juvenile, but when she did, there was a lot to like as she competed rather respectably in a good fillies maiden won by smart prospect, The Lark. She raced towards the rear, last as the race began to heat up, but amongst evident greenness, she made good headway to finish sixth, faring best of the newcomers. Time will certainly be key to her, but as stamina is drawn upon, she is likely to have plenty more to offer. DROPPED - Showed a really likeable attitude to finally score, but ultimately has served her purpose and I don't see her as particularly interesting from this point forward I must say. Liber Nauticus Azamour x Serres – 22.03.2010 – Bay filly Sir Michael Stoute Azamour filly from the family of Conduit who made a winning debut in fine style at Goodwood; overcoming inexperience takingly. Despite needing encouragement to maintain her position from early on, she benefited from the overly fast pace that saw the leaders falter in the closing stages, coming through with a strong burst when the penny dropped to win going away. Her homework was excellent after, but unsurprisingly she was put away early with this season and a Classic campaign forefront of mind. DROPPED - I dislike the Oaks immensely and fully believe that group of fillies to be a collection of the worst in history, so the fact this laboured looking filly could only finish fifth in that field, equals an immediate dismissal. Market Town Mizzen Mast x Geographic – 06.02.2010 – Bay colt Charlie Hills Taking first foal from the family of Aptitude and Sleep Easy, who ran with plenty promise on debut in a strong contest; hampered at the top of the straight, but staying on pleasingly afterwards, despite evident inexperience. Had soundness issues after and was unable to truly build on that debut next time, when seeing too much daylight and running up weak under pressure behind Code Of Honor, a winner again since. Put away after and having been allowed time to strengthen and mature, should be able to show his true worth this season. DROPPED - I was really looking forward to this colt in the Autumn, especially when he grew up and got his act together, but Hong Kong came knocking and off he now goes to ply his trade there instead. Persepolis Dansili x La Persiana – 23.04.2010 – Grey colt Sir Michael Stoute 120,000gns son of Dansili who is a half-brother to Qushchi, from the family of Grand Lodge. Had been pleasing in homework prior to debut, where he got stuck in the mud having raced enthusiastically, but set the record straight a fortnight later when chasing home the promising Correspondent; giving away first run having had to overcome a horrible draw. Was always going to be more of a three-year-old and now strengthened by another winter on his back, should have no trouble taking a maiden en route to better things. DROPPED - Has proved to be disappointingly weak in a finish, showing no real fight so far this season in any of his three races and ultimately looking a bit tripless. Plutocracy Dansili x Private Life – 06.04.2010 – Bay colt David Lanigan Lovely son of Dansili who is a half-brother to Persian Storm and is very much a work in progress. In desperate need of the outing on debut, before showing improved form at Windsor second time around; squeezed out at the start and playing catch-up thereafter, but running on well under moderate handling. Showed promise again on third start, never put in the race understandably, and as a result starts off life in handicap company rated a lowly seventy; a mark I'm sure he'll exploit in time, especially when raced beyond a mile. Portmonarch Galileo x Egyptian Queen – 29.01.2010 – Bay colt David Lanigan Galileo colt who showed sound and steady improvement in three maiden runs last year; travelling well for a long way on debut, but not knocked about when unable to pick up. His strong travelling again caught the eye on his next two starts, but weakness ultimately proved the difference between good runs and winning ones, once pressure was applied. Having now filled his frame, if he can bring it all together I suspect few will be better handicapped this season than he, from a mid-seventies mark; especially when sent over middle-distances. DROPPED - Hoped once getting that elusive winning and showing better off the bridle, he would kick on, but he has not and patience has finally run out for this highly frustrating animal. Reqaaba Exceed And Excel x Something Blue – 21.02.2010 – Bay filly John Gosden 130,000gns daughter of Exceed and Excel from a good sprint family who was thrown in deep on debut, but showed why when finishing on the heels of some pretty useful and far more experienced opponents; despite being denied a run briefly and reported to have not acted on the ground. Failed to build on that a fortnight later when posting a very flat performance, certainly not her running, and a serious setback has dampened the once high regard connections held, but worth giving more time too, especially once handicapping. Secret Number Raven's Pass x Mysterial – 02.03.2010 – Bay colt Saeed Bin Suroor Raven's Pass colt who is a half-brother to connections' extremely smart pair, Dubai Destination and Librettist, and who made arguably the most taking debut of last season. He fluffed the start badly and had to do a good deal of running early, then despite greenness, weave through back-numbers just to get into a challenging position; switched out wide to do so and finally asked to pick up a more experienced rival who had enjoyed a perfect trip throughout. It was a maiden packed with nice physical types that stood up on the clock, leaving the Godolphin charge looking a horse with a real future, a future to match his breeding, and interesting to see how he fares tasked with stiffer assignments in the coming months. Shababeek Shirocco x Tanaghum – 05.02.2010 – Bay colt Mark Johnston Half-brother to Tactic from a good family and caught the eye on debut, when of course in the care of John Dunlop. The son of Shirocco was clueless in the early stages, finding himself last at halfway, but got the message as the race wore on and eventually finished off strongly into a closing fourth as the line came; never given a hard time from the saddle. In equally good hands and looks to have plenty more to offer this season; ultimately in time, over trips that draw more upon his stamina. Tarana Cape Cross x Tarakala – 29.01.2010 – Bay filly John Oxx Daughter of Cape Cross who is a half-sister to Tarankali and who made a winning debut at the Curragh; though that didn't look likely for most of the race. Green and never really able to keep pace from an early stage, the Aga Khan filly was one of the first under pressure and had to do a good deal of learning on the job, but with stamina playing a part, she got the message late and won drawing away. Lot to like about the performance and with the combination of summer ground and middle-distances, could work up into an Oaks filly. Tinghir Dansili x Palmeraie – 15.02.2010 – Bay colt David Lanigan Nicely bred son of Dansili who took plenty time to come to hand last season, but made a pleasing debut at Kempton where he was not overly knocked about to finish second, travelling into the race comfortably. Done well over the winter and is considered to be a potential Derby prospect. Likely to be back out early this year and obviously has a lot of ground to cover in order to fulfil such lofty expectations. Vital Evidence Empire Maker x Promising Lead – 12.02.2010 – Bay colt Sir Michael Stoute First foal of connections' smart Group 1 winner, herself a half-sister to Visit, from the family of the mighty Hasili. This good imposing son of Empire Maker has always been well regarded at Freemason, but equally always seen as very much a horse for the future and no surprise he finished down the field on juvenile debut, very much in need of the whole experience. Now a year older and stronger, considerable progress is expected as this nice and promising colt learns his way and gets to stretch out over middle-distances. DROPPED - Battled well to win his maiden and ridden aggressively upped in trip, possible there is more to offer, but he his one speed limits him greatly and I think he will need to well placed and well ridden to continue to prove value to follow.
Classic Division - Unraced Annunciate Arch x Valentine Band – 22.05.2010 – Bay colt Amanda Perrett Backward son of Arch who is a half-brother to Hardwicke Stakes winner, Await The Dawn, and to listed scorer, Putney Bridge. Well liked down at Coombelands and while he'll be brought along steadily, he is expected to have a nice future at a good level in time. DROPPED - Proved backward and those glimmers of promise drifted away, leaving the son of Arch to be sent to the sales, where he changed hands for a minimal amount. Ataraxis Nayef x Seven Magicians – 27.01.2010 – Bay colt Lady Cecil Niarchos colt who caught the eye on the gallops in the second half of last season, in no uncertain terms. The Derby-entered son of Nayef needed time to strengthen in the end, but having now had that, should be capable of making an impact at some point this year. Defendant Medicean x Razzle – 28.02.2010 – Bay colt Sir Michael Stoute Dam, an unraced full sister to Danehill yet to produce much of note, but this son of Medicean looks the part and caught the eye with some stellar homework towards the rear part of last season and could be one to sneak under the radar, if carrying that on into the season ahead. DROPPED - Not kicked on in handicap company, something not totally unsurprising given his sire and ultimately looks a bit tripless in sound company. Elsiniaar New Approach x Comic – 02.02.2010 – Black colt Roger Varian 220,000gns son of New Approach who is notably a half-brother to Group 1 winning globetrotter, Viva Pataca, from the family of the useful Brave Act. Well touted throughout last season on the basis of some highly impressive performances on the practice grounds and potentially an exciting middle-distance prospect for the season ahead. Fledged Dansili x Innocent Air – 19.02.2010 – Bay colt John Gosden Physically pleasing first foal of a listed winning Galileo dam, trained herself by this very handler. Shown plenty of promise at home towards the latter part of last season amongst solid yardsticks, but a bad scope denied a juvenile debut. The well regarded son of Dansili appears capable of making a good impact this season, possibly staying middle-distances in time. DROPPED - Slow progress and while still a big, raw individual, slow is the key word here. His maiden win proved his significant limitations and given the M6 would struggle to draw out his stamina, he is going to need to be dropped into some dire staying events to continue finding success, thus is not looking lucrative to stick with. Hamelin Cape Cross x Love Divine – 31.03.2010 – Bay colt Lady Cecil Lordship Stud colt who is a full brother to connections' smart Native Ruler, and half-brother to St Leger winner, Sixties Icon. Longterm prospect, but there was a lot to like about what he has shown to date and with the benefit of another winter now on his back, he is worthy of monitoring, especially once experienced and handicapping. Jammy Guest Duke Of Marmalade x Ardbrae Lady – 03.04.2010 – Bay colt George Margarson Highly regarded half-brother to the useful Jackaroo, out of a Guineas runner-up who herself is a half-sister to the listed winner, Radio Gaga. Yard don't have an influx of debut winners, but do well when it comes to those above average and this colt seems just that based on his ability to mix it with some of the stables brightest lights. DROPPED - I still think this horse is verging on pattern class, but his campaigning has been atrocious. He is a sprinter and returned to that sphere, he has the requisite class to make an impact and reward faith, but connections bizarrely are planning a Winter campaign instead over further. Passing Parade Cape Cross x Model Queen – 30.03.2010 – Bay filly Lady Cecil 500,000gns half-sister to Group 1 sprinter, Regal Parade, not to mention Acomb Stakes winner, Entifaadha, from the family of the mighty Zafonic. Came to hand early and showed plenty ability in her homework, before problems hit for this well-actioned filly, but has time on her side. DROPPED - Exciting early prospect, who came close to making the track as a young juvenile, but never sighted since, and not now worth her place on the list sadly. Pembroke Excellent Art x Mrs Marsh – 20.02.2010 – Bay colt William Haggas Quality colt who is a half-brother to outstanding miler, Canford Cliffs and has always been highly rated at Highclere. Has been brought along gently, having needed plenty of time, but helped by an another winter, he is nearing the time to be able to come and show what he can offer. DROPPED - Bitter disappointment on debut, where greenness was not solely an adequate defence. Not working out to be the prospect once thought, and easily dismissed now. Premium Dansili x Arum Lily – 21.02.2010 – Bay filly Charlie Hills Half-sister to Grade 1 winner, Redwood, and to previous list entrant, Perennial, who has really come into her own since a winter break. The big, white faced filly looks an exciting prospect for the season ahead and has a pleasing temperament that will stand her in good stead as she sets out to uphold family tradition in the coming months. Pressure Point Oasis Dream x Arrive – 27.02.2010 – Bay colt Sir Michael Stoute Big, scopey type from a family the yard know inside-out, being a full brother to Visit and half-brother to Promising Lead. Hinted at ability throughout his juvenile season, despite never being remotely ready to see a racecourse, but brought on by a winter on his back and an exciting prospect for the season ahead. Punditry Medicean x Las Flores – 26.05.2010 – Bay colt John Gosden Late foal who is a half-brother to previous list entrant and highly progressive stayer, Aiken, as well as the useful Nationalism. Not tasked with much at home to date, but certainly hinted at ability and likely to progress with racing; stamina to be his forte. DROPPED - Lacking in scope and lacking progression, though it must be said, he has not been done any favours by some shocking and woeful, if not laughable placement. Royal Ballet Pivotal x Dance A Dream – 02.04.2010 – Chestnut colt Luca Cumani Related to winners out of a dam who is a full sister to Entrepreneur, with further family including Virtual and Lahaleeb. He is a powerful, athletic colt who needed time last season to grow and strengthen, but remains a horse his experienced handler holds in high estimation. DROPPED - Big, strong colt whose growing has kept him sidelined and hindered his progress to such an extent that I don;t think he is worth taking forward. Secret Session Mizzen Mast x Lynnwood Chase – 19.03.2010 – Bay colt Marco Botti Half-brother to Pisco Sour and was noted showing promise on the gallops from early last season, but despite holding a Group 1 entry, never made it to the course after spending time out of training. Still held in high regard, however, and certainly worth keeping an eye out for early doors, with homework continuing to please. DROPPED - Big reputation throughout his juvenile season, but alarm bells started to ring when he failed to make the track, and has assumed the typical profile of an early type. That said he should have won on debut, but his performances since have been despicable and one to forget in a hurry. Wilhana Singspiel x Jathabeeh – 28.03.2010 – Bay filly Roger Varian From a successful family the yard know well, this backward type is a half-sister in particular to the talented bridesmaid that is Mijhaar with further family including Iffraaj. Hinted that she has a future and has been given the time her pedigree suggests she'll need to flourish. DROPPED - Came close to making her debut earlier this season, but allowed her attitude to get in the way and her difficult nature continues to be of issue, meaning it is time to say goodbye to the daughter of Singspiel.
Juvenile Division Airfield Dansili x Emplane – 31.01.2011 – Bay filly Lady Cecil From a successful family being a full sister to the useful trio of Aviate, Early March and the ill-fated Wingwalker. She looks a nice type and hopefully she will be able to make an impact later in the year. Cambridge Rail Link x Alumni – 28.01.2011 – Bay filly Charlie Hills Rail Link has not made much impact as a sire, but for producing slow, scopeless types, but this filly is one of the nicest looking offspring to come from him so far, certainly not scopeless, and out of a Cheshire Oaks winner, Cambridge is a half-sister to the useful Dux Scholar. She is very much one for next term, once stretched out over middle-distances, but could well make a brief impact as a juvenile beforehand. Colourful Champs Elysees x Rainbow Lake – 19.03.2011 – Bay filly Lady Cecil Half-sister to Riposte, Kind and Powerscourt, to name but three smart types and this nice, scopey filly looks an exciting type to continue the family tradition, though unlikely to be seen any time soon. Fallen In Line Pivotal x Fallen Star – 03.03.2011 – Bay colt John Gosden Full brother to the talented listed scorer, Fallen Idol and a half-brother to Group 1 winning filly, Fallen For You, from the family of Fly To The Stars. Connections have been served well by this family and this colt looks to be another to uphold the reputation. Free Eagle High Chaparral x Polished Gem - 04.05.2011 - Bay colt Dermot Weld Half-brother to connections talented mare, Sapphire, from a sound and successful Moyglare bloodline; this late colt has been posting some superb homework and is very well regarded by all down at Rosewell. Not short of speed, but hoped he will make up into a smart middle-distance type next season. Hooded Empire Maker x Yashmak – 04.03.2011 – Bay colt Roger Charlton Closely related to Sound Of Nature, from a quality Juddmonte family responsible for Commander In Chief, Dushyantor, Reams Of Verse and Waning, to name but four. Quality colt and well regarded with an Autumn campaign the target. Kaiulani Danehill Dancer x Royal Shyness – 27.04.2011 – Bay filly Mick Channon Nice filly from a reasonable family and a half-sister to yards juvenile winner, Jillnextdoor. Made waves on the practice ground from early on and looks capable of making an impression pre-Royal Ascot, having continued to catch the eye stepped up into fast work. Munaaser New Approach x Safwa – 17.02.2011 – Bay colt Sir Michael Stoute First foal from a good Hamdan family that includes Maraahel, Mostashaar and Tazahum; a family the stable knows well. Unlikely to be seen before the Autumn, but looks a nice type with a future on early impressions. Mutaraadif Dynaformer x Dawla – 03.04.2011 – Bay colt Roger Varian Big strapping colt, whose is a third foal from a dam that is a half-sister to the useful Moiqen, from a sound bloodline. Going to want a bit of time, given his size, but could be interesting later in the season. Muteela Dansili x Nufoos – 19.02.2011 – Bay filly Mark Johnston Half-sister to Group 1 winning juvenile, Awzaan and to the smart and progressive list runner, Hajras, from the family of Watching. Looks an exciting prospect on paper and this family has served the yard well in recent seasons. Renown Champs Elysees x Fame At Last – 23.05.2011 – Chestnut colt Dermot Weld I have high hopes for the freshman sire, and this late foal is from the cracking family of Famous Name and Big Break. Another unlikely to be seen for a while yet, but looks capable of upholding the good family tradition when ready to rock. Tapestry Galileo x Rumplestiltskin – 18.01.2011 – Bay filly Aidan O'Brien Both siblings have won and this filly, out of a quality racemare, hails from a family tailing back to Kingmambo and Miesque. Early foal, bred to be effective as a juvenile and holds a couple interesting entries. Taqneen Cape Cross x Badee A – 06.04.2011 – Bay colt Ed Dunlop Went through the ring for 240,000gns and is a half-brother to smart performer, Dunelight, as well as to the progressive sprinter, Leahurst, from the family of Mahboob. Looks an interesting type who could be seen in the late summer months onward. Time Signal Champs Elysees x Sandglass – 15.02.2011 – Bay filly Sir Michael Stoute Dam, yet to produce anything outstanding, but this quality-looking filly comes from the family responsible for Timepiece, Passage Of Time, Father Time and troubled, but progressive list-runner, Continuum. Throne Room Oasis Dream x Magnificent Style – 21.02.2011 – Bay colt John Gosden Half-brother to Group 1 winning trio, Nathaniel, Playful Act and Great Heavens, as well as six other winners including the useful pair, Changing Skies and Echoes In Eternity. From a sharper sire than his siblings, it will be interesting to see what impact this colt can make in his debut season.

A few disappointments undoubtedly and of the four winners, 6/4 was the highest price returned, but the vague positive is that I still think one or two nice horses were unearthed, undoubtedly headlined by the Rosewell filly, Big Break, and with the wet season past, it's still early days for some of the others.

Eight separate horses either returned at or were readily available at double-figures which certainly helped to create the healthy margin, but the strike rate of one in four is also pleasing, particularly as the list suffered a quite sustained baron spell mid-season this year. The 2010 list uncovered a few better horses as only Fallen For You tasted Group 1 success from this crop, but six others scored at Group level and this list certainly now sets the new standard going forward.

Cravern Meeting
Portmonarch posted an early contender for most dismally disappointing performance of the season, having been faced with what was quite frankly a guilt-edged opening. His work had been enough that connections kept him in the Derby picture at the latest confirmation stage and it was a major disappointment to see him struggling before they even hit the straight against a group of ordinary types. He wasn't travelling from halfway and it was such a poor show that I can only presume he was not remotely where they believed him to be in terms of fitness. It is however a worry, unfit or otherwise, to see him still back-peddle under pressure as it indicates despite his physical progress over the winter, he is still harbouring elements of weakness. Still, onward we go and the true flat season begins tomorrow as the Cravern meeting appears on the calender. Four representatives from the list will be running over the two days, though none in any of the showpiece events. 13:45 - Newmarket - Maiden - 7fQuote: Jammy Guest Duke Of Marmalade x Ardbrae Lady – 03.04.2010 – Bay colt George Margarson Highly regarded half-brother to the useful Jackaroo, out of a Guineas runner-up who herself is a half-sister to the listed winner, Radio Gaga. Yard don't have an influx of debut winners, but do well when it comes to those above average and this colt seems just that based on his ability to mix it with some of the stables brightest lights. While Estifzaaz has become a sounder horse over the winter, Caramack has been working well in recent weeks and Music Master showed promise on debut, this is a maiden there for the taking with a nice debutant and Jammy Guest is one of a couple that could fit the bill. He keeps good partners on the gallops and his trainer thinks the world of him, hence his lofty Guineas entry, so a big run is certainly expected tomorrow, but the draw is a definite hindrance and he may prove to need this outing. Rating - *** 17:15 - Newmarket - Maiden - 10fQuote: Demonic Dansili x Bionic – 29.01.2010 – Bay colt Sir Henry Cecil Half-brother to the smart Phoenix Tower from a strong Juddmonte bloodline, and highly regarded at Warren Place since day one. Disappointing therefore that he failed to show why on debut late last season, clueless from the start and none more so than under pressure, but was never going to make much impact as a juvenile and should have learnt plenty so well worth sticking with to set the record straight in the months ahead. Ran a long, long way below his capabilities on debut, when far too green and raw to do himself any sort of justice. Has done well over the winter and still shows the homework that puts him right up there with any at Warren Place this season. Very much Sir Henry's Derby horse at this stage and would expect him to put the record straight tomorrow, though the yard being forward enough needs be taken on trust at this point in the season. (Hot Snap potentially may prove a yardstick in that regard as she is and has been working very well ahead of this engagement, though at the same time, if she doesn't run the big race expected, it is worth remembering she is a once raced filly being asked to step significantly up in class over a trip that will prove sharp enough.) Rating - **** 17:15 - Newmarket - Maiden - 10fQuote: Tinghir Dansili x Palmeraie – 15.02.2010 – Bay colt David Lanigan Nicely bred son of Dansili who took plenty time to come to hand last season, but made a pleasing debut at Kempton where he was not overly knocked about to finish second, travelling into the race comfortably. Done well over the winter and is considered to be a potential Derby prospect. Likely to be back out early this year and obviously has a lot of ground to cover in order to fulfil such lofty expectations. Unfortunate that he clashes with Demonic at this early stage, as my allegiance must fall with the Juddmonte charge, but certainly capable of featuring well himself and taking full advantage should the Cecil charge fail to fire. The woeful performance of Portmonarch is certainly a concern to his chances however, in terms of the forwardness of the Lanigan yard. The Haggas newcomer is a nice type and the Godolphin charge has obvious form claims, so this is a decent maiden that will produce winners going forward. Rating - **

Re: TOP BILLING
DB cant agree with you more on the Portmonarch performance never looked like he was going to get in the frame, always struggling.
What did you make of the Punditry run in that race? Raced at the front do you think it suit?

I thought it was a solid run, and that he looked more tractable than before, but he was allowed to dawdle along out in front so have to take that into consideration. The blinkers alongside the change of tactics seemed to suit, and no doubt the latter played to his strengths more, which are, in all honesty, pretty limited. He doesn't have the engine Aiken has, or the ability, but he does appear to still be somewhat progressive and I'm still hopefully he can go up through the gears a little once tackling stouter distances in handicap company.

FieldenIntello has beaten two ordinary fields in two lowly races and is priced solely on the fact connections regard him enough to bring him over here, which is fair enough but not exactly appealing. It's an intriguing renewal, as it mostly always is, but there are no future Classic winners on show here, so where he fits in, I'm not exactly sure. He's probably the one to beat, if not for anything other than he has shown a likeable turn of foot in his two victories and may have more to offer now encountering a faster (ish) surface. Race & Status was given a fairly aggressive ride in the sales race and for all that he ran well, I don't think that suited him and he's certainly worth another chance to match the impression he made on debut. That said, the maiden field he made that impression against were tripe and almost all of the Raven's Pass brigade looked woefully one-dimensional last season, so I can't say I'd be rushing to take the 2/1. Kerbaaj was an impressive winner of a Sandown maiden and has come back to form at home since the winter, having missed the rest of his juvenile season with sickness. I think it is insulting that King George River and Luhaif are available at the same odds as the Hills charge, and with connections adamant he'll stay, he must be the value of the race. There is a concern however on breeding, in that a couple of his relatives have made equally bright starts to their racing careers and have not gone on as expected, so I'd probably revert back to the Fabre charge as the token selection. Wood DittonThe only one I know anything about is Mutajally, a half-brother to 2000 Guineas winner, Makfi, who came to hand late last season, and did some nice homework alongside a horse called Chengo who duly went on to make a winning debut at Lingfield weeks later. He has been geared towards this and will know more than the a-typical Stoute debutant. Of the Hamdan quartet, Hanagan has obviously opted to ride him, but on paper, while all four make plenty appeal, Maraweh obviously tops the list, hailing from the family of Mawatheeq, Rumoush and Ghanaati, with further family inclusive of Nashwan and Nayef, but the John Hills yard tend to take the patient approach and I suspect he will be far from ready to go on debut. She's Late is a half-brother to the quirky miler, Fury, but hasn't crossed my radar in mention of some of the yards better types, so either he is a well kept secret or not up to much. Bustopher makes more paper appeal of the two Godolphin charges, bolstered by the yard he comes from and their newcomers are always worth respecting in this race. Aldborough hails from a nice family tailing back to St Leger winner, Brian Boru, and while this trip may be sharp enough, his yard have hit the season running and he too must command plenty respect. The market will no doubt prove telling in certain cases, but two against the field would be Aldborough and Mutajally, probably in that order, but I think Bustopher will be in thick of things. CravernI was quite the fan of Toronado last season and not much has changed. He is the only horse in the field with the potential to be a Classic winner, the rest fall way short of what is needed, but my money would be on the Derby, more than the Guineas I have to say. Ghurair beat Havanna Gold and John Gosden is reluctant to send Ghurair here in a couple of weeks because he knows the horse, in his own words, is simply not good enough to win a Guineas, so that tells you all you need to know about the Hannon second string. Tawhid hasn't got a prayer unless the River Lark floods the course and Dundonnell was readily brushed aside by Toronado last year, despite the fact Toronado was only in the region of 80% fit after missing a bunch of work. It's a trial and Toronado may pitch up with plenty to work on again, in fact he most likely will, but it is still his race to loose as he is a league above this trio in opposition; maybe more than one even!! LibertarianHe did well to win as he was green as grass for the most part and making ground wasn't easy all day long at Pontecarlo. His stamina shone through in the end, and I suspect he may be more of a stayer as the season goes on, but it was a nice performance and while the opposition and margin of victory suggest he will be significantly over-faced in a Dante, there was potential for better. In fact, I suspect if that field met again in a few weeks time, they wouldn't see which way he went, but it was a performance that suggested he may be better served by another start before the Dante, if he is to have a fighting chance of doing himself justice in such a race. Where they'll find such a stepping stone, I'm not sure off the top of my head, but in short, he obviously has a long way to go in a short space of time and it is heavily unlikely he will be able to do so, but I saw enough to give him a squeak and certainly a horse worth watching as the season goes on, not least given the shrewd hands he finds himself in. (Poor grammar to end a sentence with a preposition I know, but it's late and I can't be bothered rephrasing ) 17:45 - Newmarket - Handicap C3 - 10fQuote: Hillstar Danehill Dancer x Crystal Star – 22.02.2010 – Bay colt Sir Michael Stoute Half-brother to connections' talented mare, Crystal Capella, and offered plenty promise at home, prior to making a promising debut that merited more; making good headway when short of room and finding momentum checked. Built on that next time with a narrow, but commanding win over a decent yardstick who was afforded the run of the race; well on top at the line. Likely to want a sterner stamina test this season and this Derby-entered colt could be let in lightly off an opening assessment of eighty-three. Homework has been very pleasing this spring and like Main Sequence in this contest last year, he should prove not only a well-handicapped horse, but a horse better than a handicapper. While Glenard is not a lost cause yet, there is nothing in opposition that will be racing at the same level as Hillstar will in six months time, and now tackling ten furlongs, he should quite frankly coast this en route to better things. Rating - *****

They have said they will take their time with her and could go for Coronation Stakes. Surely must go for Guineas after that and was going away at the end so must have a great chance. Very impressed on only her second start

Bonfire (from your 2011 list) 13/8 favourite for Earl of Sefton Stakes tomorrow - worth a punt DB?

Yes, it was a very taking win from Hot Snap. Not surprised she was capable of doing that as as mentioned yesterday, her homework had and has been very good since she came back in, but they were just testing the water today and that was not expected; the fact she has been able to drop back in trip, against a decent level of opposition and overcome greenness to ultimately frankly thresh them is impressive. The vibe has always been that Sir Henry is not confident she will stay the Oaks trip at this stage in her career, despite her illustrious lines, so with Big Break behind the clock for the 1000 Guineas, I think there is a very strong chance Hot Snap will be back at Newmarket in a few weeks time and the Weld filly will reroute to the Irish Guineas and be allowed more time.
Three nice runs today without any threatening the winners enclosure. Had Jammy Guest not been destroyed on the exchanges the night before, I can't help but wonder if he would have been given a more purposeful ride this afternoon, but as it was, he was given a soft introduction. He moved notably well throughout and showed glimpses of the potential he has and having not been knocked about at any stage, he was given a bit of education late on to prepare for his next start, which more than likely will see him ridden more full throttle. Demonic shaped a lot better, but was once again let down by his own immaturity and inexperience. Under pressure, he wondered around instead of going forwards, but once finding the rail and the rising ground, he stayed on well to press for second close home. The penny was also quite slow to drop with Phoenix Tower, that one able to overcome it better, though with undoubtedly superior ability admittedly, but this son of Dansili is going the right way and sooner rather than later will put it all together and show just why he is so highly regarded at Warren Place. In behind him in fifth came Tinghir, who actually ran a screamer given he was patently unfit. He was admittedly well positioned throughout, but given his physical condition, it was an admirable performance to still be in contention at the furlong pole, and while he blew up in the closing stages, he still managed a respectable finish and will be far more of a handful for whatever opposition he tackles next time around.
Bonfire is short at those odds, just because tomorrow is a bit of an exploratory mission and he has not done a great deal of work leading up to this. At least off the track anyway, the gelding operation has helped ease his temperament, though by all accounts, not fully settle him down and the small field would worry me, just because he is fresh headstrong horse with his own ideas. Stipulate goes well fresh and has done well again over the winter; his homework has never matched the level he now competes at, but he could be the value at 5/1; this has been an odd race in recent seasons and I personally have no greatly strong opinion on it I'm afraid, but if I played, I'd play the Juddmonte charge.
