After her win in the Prix Kergolay I have always shortlisted Verema for this race. She quickened well an showed good stamina which will be vital for this one. My other pick is Mount Athos, I was undecided for a while as he ran below par the last couple or times but has received some glowing reports from people on twitter over the last few days. A run similar to last season with the added luck would see him bang there.

I backed Verema at 16's early last week and Mount Athos at 10's, both each-way.

Happy to get some place money back off Mount Athos, who ran well. As did Red Cadeaux (2nd again) and Simenon. no match for Fiorente though who was a worthy winner.

Sadly my other selection Verema broke down and had to be put down, such a shame for connections to travel over for the race but have to travel home without their horse. Also interesting to hear Brown Panther suffered 'severe lacerations' to his foreleg and still finished a gutsy 8th. Hope he's ok.

I didn't have a bet but Michael Stoute's ex inmate wins the cup bet Stoute wished he was still training it.

Ridiculous when you think about it really 19 of 24 runners started careers outside Australia and first 5 are all British/Irish bred yet its still an Australian victory, wish they'd turn their breeding attention to it if they're so desperate to win it or buy horses at a younger age. Also weighting for this years seems a bit odd having likes of dunaden and others carrying super high weights yet fiorente third in cox plate was not carrying so much
