Its amazing how cheap well bred 2yo become when they bomb first time up
You can pick up a 2yo by a g1 winner for very little at a fraction of the price
you would pay for a unraced 2yo by a g1 winner.

so i thought id share my advice on making money in the game and share
some of my successes trading horses.

Ok So what to do

1) You want to skip until around April/May when the 2yo have started to run

2) once there goto the thursday auction we are looking for 2yo that have had at least a run
if there are none go to the next week and look again

3) So i have found as you can see below a 2yo that fits the criteria who did not perform well so
take alook at the race summary and see if there was a reason for the bad run as you can see below
there were a few reason why this 2yo did not perform well he got hampered and got outpaced being a
1m5 horse in a 5f Maiden he probably needs a 1m1f or 1m2f maiden

Image

4) Buy the horse you should get him cheap enough i got this one for £11,000 i have bought some for as little as £5000

5) as you can see he is a real stayer and had no chance in a 5 furlong maiden he has some nice stats too but not a world
beater.

Image

6) Now we need to race him we need either to get his rating up or win a race so we can make a nice profit on him
its amazing how much money a 1 in the form can add. I always look for small field races start looking for maidens
see if you can find one at ideal distance with less than 6 runner if not look for handicaps.

7) As you can see did not take me long to find a race for him and he only has 4 rivals so perfect for us
I always stick my claimer on to take off a valuable 7 pounds in Maidens and Handicaps if you dont have one
hire one in the Apprentice screen.

Image

8> Lets go Racing and hope for the best the distance is ideal and the opposition does not look too difficult
he should finish in the top 2 at least here he has had 2 months since his last run so all should be perfect
Opened up 2nd fav but got good market support (Not Me) Coped with paddock fine lets race

9 As you can see he got beat but his rating went up so its onto the next race i think i will step him up to 1m2

Image

10 he had a few more runs got outpaced stuck him in 1m2 maiden with all his opponents unraced
and he scooted up RIGHT of to the Austin expecting A BIG Profit after that romp 00000s

Image

11 auction time and the hammer came down at BOOM £116k Thats a Profit of a whopping £105,000 Profit

Here are a couple of examples of my successes trading

Hope this has been helpful

Nice tutorial PJ! This one will for sure be helpful for people struggling to get off the ground money-wise (ie, me in my no-cheating save, lol).

This is a great strategy!
A quick and easy way to build up a bank!

I did it a much harder way - at first by just racing and selling horses that either weren't that good or selling good horses off once they got old and started losing form.
Once I got a few good horses (maybe consistent listed runners) and keeping an eye on the form of other runners in a race - I started punting - max win bets. That helped me get a good bank going and I could start buying the better horses (not the most expensive)
From there I would limit purchases so I'd still have 1million Aussie dollars left after the 2yo sales for an insurance - then over time with some luck on the punt - sales and better horses, I was able to start buying the most expensive lots at the 2yo auctions and picking up some good Thursday sales horses.
I didn't start breeding after I'd raced approx. 40 odd virtual years (I'd advise start breeding your good horses asap) but now I have around 24/26 horses in my stable and have approx. 40 million Aussie dollars banked!
I raced my two first bred horses last night in a 2000m maiden for a first up win and a 4th - so I am quite stoked :-)

This is how i play the game. I also buy half decent 3yo and race them in claimers and selling races until i get their rating to 70+ then sell them. You only pay something like 5% of the price to buy your horse back in those type of races so its not that hard to up their rating.
Great post btw.

This thread is hugely appreciated. Just got started with the series with SO7 and was STRUGGLING to make ends meet after two fast seasons and losing all my starting funds in the process. After reading this the light went on...

The big thing I'm "struggling" with now is the emotional attachment. I have some mid-level horses that win 2 out of 3 races I run them in that have decent stats, but not great, that I feel like should be half of a good breeding pair (with the other partner being better of course until I can have two top flight partners).

So far I have to say it's great seeing my 60-rated horses taking apart horses rated 50% higher and making nice profits with them, but I'm not sure how reliable this path is.

Don't get attached to these horses in the early seasons. Once you have built up a small bank - start breeding and selling the young horses that don't perform. Once you get the ball rolling with breeding then you can get attached - These horses you have now will mean nothing when you breeed your first Group 1 winner.
