What I do is accumulate a lot of cash early by cashing bets the cheating way. Then I go to every auction looking for mares with decent racing records or high ratings or that have a lineage with lots of class in it. I especially attend the Breeding Mares auction and look for the same things but also a history of producing good runners. I get lots and lots of mares early and also keep cashing bets so I have enough money to breed to the best stallions.

After a few years have passed I start reviewing the mares and their potential bar along with their foal production and cull the ones who aren't cutting it. I'm always checking fillies and mares at the auctions for more stock but by now my own breeding program is producing keepers.

When you find a stallion who throws a lot of high potential foals - keep going to him because he is proven but also don't be afraid to search a lot of stallions and breed a few to them to see if they can produce high potential foals. If you have a low potential mare and breed her to a stud and then you get a high potential foal - that stud clearly has class.

I've told the story a few times here - In my US save there was a superstar stud named La Vie Dei Colori who has sired almost 75% of my league team. I have never seen such a potent sire ever in this game. I bought the worst mare ever from an auction just for the hell of it - 0 for 135 and 10% potential. I bred her to La Vie Dei Colori and got an 85% potential yearling.
