I usually give them a few tries over a couple of years (usually only if I bred them myself and if they are from particularly good lines that don't usually produce this trait) to see if it will be solved with age, if that doesn't work I either sell them or decide to preserve my lines and ONLY put them with relaxed stallions. But if the offspring over 3 years ALL don't settle then I'll retire that mare. However if the offspring are exceptional once gelded then I'll keep breeding with that mare and sell off the fillies and geld the colts. E.g. I have a mare who was a top 1m4f-2miler she settled herself but EVERY stallion I put her with produces horses that don't settle after their 2yo year, but every one of these horses is just exceptional so I geld the boys, they settle perfectly and crush everything else at 1m4-2m. That line won't ever continue because I wouldn't bother to breed with a filly that wouldn't settle out of that mare, but it's nice to get a few extra G1 winners. |
