I've seen many topics on this subject so forgive me: I do simple training mode. What I want to know is, can you improve your horse's core ability from gallops. Or is it purely a fitness/conditioning and a horse comparison aid? Like if you have a 2 year old, can you gallop him over hurdles or fences etc to improve the horses jumping ability? As the horse would be getting familiar to obstacles and gain experience? Or is it a waste of time? |

i ran 2yo's on gallops for ages to try and avoid them running green but had no effect i think its just used to trial your younger horses against your older stars |

I use the gallops to run my new 2 year olds against each other. I pick a distance say 1 mile and run the 2 year olds that are between 1 mile and 1 mile 4f against each other to find which one would be suited to that distance better on the racetrack, the only thing is that my best horse on the gallops at 1 mile isn't the best horse on the racetrack at 1 mile....so my answer is I don't know what it's used for really!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

For sprinters you see which of your sprinters peaks more early in the season and put those in the early maiden races, the others train a little bit more and enter maiden races 2 month later. |

With 2yo sprinters(With my best 3yo sprinter) I will put them in the gallops 3 times before the Dubai meetings in march and then enter them for maidens after. I've found this a big help. With other horses, I will run them a furlong below their breeding indicator and see which ones Ran On, Stayed On etc. So a 2yo with B/I 1m4 will do the gallops over 1m3 with a 1m2 or 1m3 horses as the lead. The longer the Breeding Indicator, the later in the season I leave before doing any training. Also, having a couple of runs on the all weather gallops DOES help before a racing on the Dirt. As with the sprinters mentioned above, all of the gallops are on the A/W and I only enter them in maidens at Lingfield, Southwell, Wolverhampton etc. |
