Using the editor can be tricky. Here are a few tips. Hopefully this will be updated.


Exporting. There is a bug that means if you save after exporting you get issues (such as rails without tops). When you have finished editing a map and done the lighting (and saved) exit the editor. Launch the editor again and re-load the map and the export and quit.

2D Fern trees. Don't look good close to the track and do not convert to 2.5d trees like other billboard trees do. Best used in the distance.

Adding ground textures decrease frame rates. Try to stick to five or 6 max.

Be careful with excessive terrain undulations. Close up what looks like minor undulations can be severe. Try them in the game in jockey mode.

Care with crowd density. These can be a frame rate hit. Try to have crowds on the rail and in the stands rather than very dense crowds.

Size of overlay. It is important there is enough space around the racecourse to have hills etc. to give an impression of distance but don't overdo it. The bigger the map the more the PC has to work.

Cars. There is a problem placing cars. They often end up slightly in the air or underground. Use the fine lower/raise (num pad 1 and 4) it is fiddly however.

Courses Align points can be tricky so manually bring the points in close to the rails so the horse run to the inside of the racecourse. Also put the inside fences right up to the rails where possible. In jockey mode you cannot manoeuvre your horse inside the points so place carefully and test in the game.

When placing fences place all fences of the same type at the same time. That way you can scale and size one correctly and then next time you place the fence the scaling will be remembered. Be sure to get the size right as if they are too small or too big it can look very odd.

With jumps and hurdles courses make sure the course is wide enough for a big field. If necessary widen the course in places.

If you lose the scale for a fence simply select one on the racecourse of the same type and it's scaling will be saved so you can now place these fences replicating the scaling.

The Big TV screens. Don't forget they are for the benefit of the first person jockey mode (in the game). Position/adjust them so they can be seen by the riders.

Make sure entities (such as trees, buildings) are not too big (compared to the horses,rails). They will look odd in first person mode and also give the impression the game world is small. Shrinking entities in the distance can have the opposite effect and make the game world seem bigger.

You must scale terrain textures otherwise they will be very blury:
Open the editor and load the racecourse. Move around and look at the part of the course containing the terrain texture you are scaling. Press F2 to lock (so moving the mouse around does not move the view).
Click TERRAIN.
Select the texture on the right so it has a RED rectangle surround.
A yellow box with green surround and a down-right pointing arrow will be above-right of the texture. Move the mouse pointer over that box.
Now HOLD the left mouse button down while holding L-SHIFT on the keyboard and and the same time scroll the mouse wheel down! Keep scrolling down and the detail of the textures will increase.


3D Trees. There are some very nice trees in the editor but these are all high poly and will hit lower spec machines if used a lot. Use the 2D billboard trees. If the user selects 2.5d trees in the game options these will replace the 2d trees in game (this does not include the fern tree). 3D trees should be used sparingly where you have trees right next to the racecourse. When these trees are close up they give a nice impression of depth. When they are in the distance they may as well be 2D trees anyway because you don't see the depth or the detail.

I have a suggestion for the course editor. Could you enter an option to make one or two start chutes, on a similar principle to the end chutes? You can use it for those courses that have multiple starting chutes, like Epsom and Goodwood. For example, with Epsom, the 6f and 7f races can start at their correct position.
