Post Laptops
Just before I could upload horses in the window my laptop had an incident with some water (ffs) meaning I have lost all my new horses who seemed to be beating my league horses by a few lengths consistently which in itself is annoying. However, I am terrible with laptops and what processors etc are and whatI should go for etc. So was wondering for a little bit of help as some of yous seem to be good with computers. I have up to £700 to spend but don’t think I will need to use it all as I will pretty much just be using it to play this and do some pretty basic stuff on. What would you guys suggest?

Big fan of this company, both my desktop and laptop came from them and I got the laptop for about £500 from the outlet by waiting until they had only one left, sadly the current outlet options are beyond budget but might be worth waiting to see if they drop price again.

Built to spec maybe cheaper than buying a brand, I like dell laptops personally, but you pay for the name, am personally curious if a chrome book can cope with so7. I use one for work and like the battery life I may have to test the theory at some point.

I currently reside in New Zealand but used to use Overclockers back in the UK many years ago.

If you can spend a little more and you want a great gaming laptop which will last a good few years. A little above your price range but these are very good gaming laptops from MSI. Most of these will be upgradable as well.

This will play some top games also if you want it to play other ones.

For 5 to 700 pounds - laptops in that range will play SO7 easily.
Just make sure you're getting plenty of storage and a decent video card.
You wont need a top end video card to run the game.

How bad is your laptop? Definitely worth taking it to a technician to see if they can access the hard drive. Then get the save and db files copied onto a usb or emailed. Worth a try given how long this game takes to get a barn going!

I’d say pretty bad, MacBook too so probably more expensive to get things fixed, and done to, than buying a new laptop  im more annoyed as was using this season to gauge my horses to the ones I’m breeding now so I could get a good grip on where they would be in the league but now that’s buggered  shows what I was doing was sort of on the right track as was only breeding seriously for 4 or 5 season before the league started so a relatively new save so hopefully will be able to pick up where I left off!

Post Re: Laptops
My laptop is about 5 years old and runs SO7 on the highest spec at 60 fps without issue. It is an ASUS but I am not sure the make is that important as the ACER I had before ran it fine too.

I think it come down more to the components, processor, video card, clock speed etc.

Avoid integrated graphics card if you can. Some work fine some don't. A dedicated video card is a massive improvement for the extra outlay.

Get the best processor you can afford and an SSD drive makes things much better. Mine has 2 hard drives one SSD and one ordinary. This keeps cost down. Stuff that needs to run faster (games, video editing etc) I put on the SSD bulk stuff goes on the ordinary one.

My set up is :

Intel I-7 @ 2.60GHz
16mb Ram
120GB SSD
2TB HD
NVidia GeForce GTX graphics card.

I think I got a decent discount and got it for either 899 or 999 about 5 years ago when it was pretty much top end. You should be able to pick something up like that for less than £700 now.

I would say an i5 would probably do just as well. But I wouldn't scrimp on the SSD or dedicated graphics. Clock speed is as important as the processor I believe but not certain on that info.

Looks fine but can't see anything about the graphics card. Might be worth checking with others here who have integrated graphics and see if it makes much difference.

Personally I would go for this one ahead of it if you can take the extra £30. Might only be an i5 but you have the two hard drives and a good dedicated graphics card. Also a bigger screen which is also helpful. With just 512GB storage space on the one you highlighted you are going to run out of space pretty quickly especially as Windows will take up a huge chunk.

It is a minefield laptop buying so I wouldn't jump in without having a really good look around. Your one looks okay but I would reckon you could get more for that money.

The difference between i5 and i7 is not as great as say 8gb ram to 16ram, the more memory the better. And as I said previously a dedicated graphics is a big plus too BUT it really depends on what else you are using it for.

My advice would be to have a good search for a few days and find the best mix within these parameters, left as a minimum, right as desirable:

i5 to i7 (never buy a Celeron though)
8gb to 16gb Ram
SSD hard drive - SSD and ordinary larger hard drive
Dedicated graphics.

Looking at those Curry's prices if you shop around you should be able to get most if not all within your budget. Sadly you have to do a lot of comparing. Sometimes its better to go for the places where you can add and remove the bits you want.

I agree , make sure u get a good graphics card . Pick the right one and it should last 5 years. I had a look at currys and I'd pick the Acer Nitro and a good price :D :D Adam do u own research about graphics cards and that.

Hi

My business was computing before I retired, so know quite a bit about laptops.

The one you mention is not good enough. Needs a bigger hard drive and a dedicated graphics card.

The one Lordedaw suggests looks okay. It has a big hard drive and a dedicated graphics card.

It is very hard to find a good laptop at the moment without paying a premium price. Most computer stuff is manufactured in the far east and Covid has caused delays to shipping. My laptop cost £750 a year ago, a similiar one is now £1100. Scarecety causes profit mongering.

I have had good search of internet and can't see anything better than Lordedaw's suggestion for that price.
