I looked at this a while ago and have now forgotten the details but there were a number of issues with dependencies that resulted in the game not building and from what I recall the rendering engine of the desktop version would have had to be replaced which is a massive job and not possible.
Having said this there should be some sort of Mac release at some point in the future as the SDK used for the (2D) mobile game supports the Mac (but this will be 2D). so a game based on an expanded version of the next mobile release should be available. This mobile release will include improved and new sim features and a better GUI. Currently I'm waiting on the devs (of the SDK) to fix stuff which is why there has been a delay.
